CRICKET NOTES.

(By "Observer.") Saturday was not an ideal day for cricket, a sharp shower about 3.30 making- the ball very greasy and hard for the bowlers to control. Colts added another five points to their tally by defeating St. Joseph's on the first innings. Skip Irvine's stay at the -wicket was brief for his good all-round score. However, Darce Auekram played a good knock for 33, and "Tubby" Wilson, jnr., played well for 26; Colts' total being 131. With the ball, Auckram's 13 wickets for 56 was a fine effort, and accounted in no small measure for St. Joseph's small scores—47 and 78 for 7—Coley's quota being 23. Trentham are, without doubt, the most inconsistent team in the League. They play either a real good game or a thoroughly bad one. Against Advance they could, do nothing right. Playing three men short, they scratched together scores of 55 and 52, of which Griggs, senr., and Francis made 22 each. For- Advance, "Dyce" made another good score, his tally being 61. Dudding also did his bit well with 49. Brizzle and "Tubby" Wilson, senr., were the destroying- agents, throwing up a mixture which Trentham should have made a picnic of, but could not. Depot A had an eight-pointer over "Upper Hutt, Hearne (71) and Aitken (30, not out), contx-ibuting the majority of Depot's 160 runs. Sexton (8 for 27), Hearne (3 for 7) and Aitken (3 for 32) played havoc with Hutt, -whose two visits to the wicket were responsible for a grand total of 120. With Depot A there is too much unnecessary appealing every Saturday, and Depot A's skipper should put a stop to it. Only one man is in a position to appeal for 1.b.w., and that is the bowler. In most cases he is bowling- for it. To hear a man at square leg or cover- point appealing for l.b.w. is farcical. With any luck, Methodist should have had an outright win against Depot "B." With a lead of 67 on the first innings and nine of Depot's wicket down :cor 96 in their second, Methodist's chances looked rosy, but Rouse (38 not out) and Anness (30) for the last -wicket, added 63 in a bright and breezy partnership, and Methodist had to be content with a five-pointer. For the winners Andrews's core of 68 not out, including 12 fours and one six, -was the best inninc:s of the day. McKay (36) and A. McCarthy (23) were the only other double figure scorers. O'Neill took the bowling honours for "B's" with 4 for 54. Batting for Depot, Wotherspoon, 22 and 22, Rouse, 38 not out, and 12 not out, and Anniss 30 were chief scorers. McCrea, Longhurd and A. McCarthy divided the wickets. UPPER HUTT, first innings.—Haggerty, b. Sexton, 5; Murray, b. Sexton, 0; St. Johnston, c. and b. Sexton, 8; Bucknell, b. Sexton, 26; Phillipson, c. and b. Haggerty, 0 for 36; Auld, 1 for 42; Murray, 1 for 15; Williams, 3 for 14; Phillipson, 2 for 27. Depot A -won by an inning-s and 40 runs. Ordnance (152) scored an outright win over Trentham (55 and 52). Allerdyce (61) and Dudding (49) were the chief scorers for them. For Trentham, Frances (22) and Grigg, senr., (22) were the only batsmen -who showed any form at all, the l-est of the team being very medium. Trentham had at one time a ver~y sporting chance of -winning the championship, but they have been going back since their win over Depot "A". Colts, 131 (Auekram 33, Wilson 26), won on the first innings against St. Joseph's (47 and 78 for 7), Coley 23. Bowling for Colts: Auekram, 7 for 23

and 6 for 33; Dunn, 3 for 22. Bowling for St. Josephs: Tohill, 4 for 27; Allen, 3 for 38; Morton, 2 for 13. HONOURS BOARD. Batting. Andrews (Methodist) . . Results of Saturday's Matches C 22/2/36). Training Depot A, 160 for 7, declared (Hearne 71, Aitken 30 not out), defeated Upper Hutt, 80 (Bucknell 26) and 40, by an innings and 40 runs. Bowling for winners: Sexton, 4-21 and 4-6; Hearne, 3-7; Aitken, 3-32. Bowling for Upper Hutt: Williams, 3-14; Phillipson, 2-27. Methodist, 150 for 8 wickets (declared), defeated Depot "B" on the first innings, who only scored 83, but the second innings scored 159—would have kept the Church team, moving if time had permitted. For the winnei - s, Andrews scored a valuable 68 and was unbeaten, also McKay and A. McCarthy contributed their share towards the win. Rouse was the only "B" batsman who seemed to have confidence at all, and with the help of Annis in the second innings took the score from 96 to 159 before the latter batsman was caught. The Methodists are having a lot of bad luck as regards straight-out wins, but if they carry on for the rest of the season collecting five-pointers they will not be disg-raced. Ballinger is very busy trying to get his men well and truly fit for the big g'ame against Depot "A."
