WOMEN'S INSTITUTE NOTES.
The Upper Hutt Branch of the Women's Institute are holding- their annual picnic at Day's Bay on Tuesday, February 18, and it is expected that quite a number of members will be present. Mrs. John Whiteman was presented with a g-ift from the Branch on the occasion of her 76th birthday. The President, in a very able" speech, congratulated Mrs. Whiteman on attaining such an advanced age, and on behalf of the Branch expressed the hope that she would continue to enjoy the best of health. The annual meeting; of the Branch will be held on March 3, when the new committee will be elected. The President (Mrs. S. D. Rogers) has stated that she -will not be seeking re-election for the coming year as she
feels that after three and a half years' service fresh blood should be introduced. At the present time the Branch has over 160 financial members. During the past year several socials and otherfunctions have been held. The President wishes to thank all members of the committee who have worked so amicably together during her term of office, especially did she desire to thank the secretary (Mrs. A. R. Jones), who has been a wonderful help to the Institute, devoting much of her time to assisting in any matter benefiting the Branch. The thanks of the Institute are due to the Plunket Society, who have so kindly lent their rooms for committee meetings. Mrs. Rogers states that the "Women's Institute has been a "God-send" to the women of the district. It has brought
them together, whereas before they were strangers to one another, and the intei-change of knowledge, particularly in regard to craft work, has added very considerably to the interest of their daily lives. LOCAL FISHERMAN'S 1201b. CATCH. A party of local residents, among them being Messrs. T. Russell L. Russell, E. Swanson and M. Curran, spent a day's deep-sea fishing last week at Palliser Bay, and had a wonderful time. Mr. Curran (Martin) was successful in hooking a 1201b. groper. Speaking to the representative of the "Weekly Review," one of the party stated that it was only the skill of such an experienced fisherman as "Mar-tin" that could have landed such a monster. The incident will no doubt arouse the enthusiasm of followers of the sport in the district.
