UPPER HUTT CRICKET LEAGUE.
Owing to the second Test match being played this week-end in Wellington, between New Zealand and M.C.C., it has been decided to postpone all League matches in the Upper Hutt League for this week. It is to be hoped the New Zealand team will make a better showing than at Dunedin, where they put up a performance which made them look like third raters. Better fielding could be seen at Maidstone Park. Following are the results of other matches under the control of the Upper Hutt League last Saturday. Upper Hutt, 204 ; Trentham, first innings 114 and second innings 136 for eight wickets. Upper Hutt having a five-point win on the first innings. Following are the most successful batsmen and bowlers for the respective teams :—Upper Hutt: Moran 101 retired, and Braid 30 not out. Trentham: Forward 56 (first innings) and Marsden 55, Christensen 22, Greig, Junr., 22 (second innings) . Bowling: Haggerty (Upper Hutt) took six for 30, and in the second innings three for 20 ; Nunn, five for 77; Williams, three for 48. For Trentham, Frances took three for 47. Under Mr. Beech, Trentham are shaping very well, and several of his young players are showing promise, including Frances and Marsden. It may be stated that on the Sunday following this Marsden again made a fine score of 76 against one of the leading teams from Wellington. Haggerty is still the same old Don, plugging away with both bat and ball. No doubt Upper Hutt are beginning to feel the benefit of his" services, and also that of "Hori" Nunn. Honours Board, Saturday, January 11th, 1936. BATTING. Moran (Upper Hutt), retired . 101 Marsden (Trentham) 55 N. McCarthy (Methodist) .... 49 Braid (Upper Hutt), n.o 30 BOWLING. SECOND ROUND OF CHAMSHIP. Methodist v. St. Joseph's. I Methodist, who were engaged | with St. Josephs in the second round | of the competition, secured an 8point win. For the winners, N. McCarthy batted excellently and contributed a valuable 49. McCarthy is another of the Methodist all-rounders and can always be relied upon to do some good for his side. W. Longhurst was the only other batsman for Methodist who shaped confidently, and his contribution was very valuable. Bowling for the winners, R. McCrea again handled the ball well, also McKay and A. McCarthy doing their share, and between them they got the St. Joseph's team out cheaply. For St. Josephs the two stalwarts, Allen and Twohill, were the only ones to stand up to the opposition. No doubt St. Josephs have had the luck against them this season, but Allen cheerfully leads his team on the field every Saturday and endeavours to give the opposition a g - ood game.
