IMPROVEMENTS NEEDED.
The Editor, Sir—As you invited correspondence that would be of interest to the Borough in general, I ask your acceptance of this letter. The Borough has two valuable assets in attracting visitors to the distinct—viz., Maidstone Park and the bathing pool at Maori Bank. Maori Bank is becoming increasingly popular each year. A number of local residents enjoy a walk to this resort, then a swim in the natural bathing pool, and view the beautiful surrounding scenery. But there is one great drawback to its advancement, owing to the danger of having to walk on the road after passing the Borough Boundary. Road traffic on Sunday last was very heavy, and unless something is done towards the formation of a footpath, I am afraid we shall see a bad accident. Perhaps the Council could again approach the Hutt County Council to assist in this much-needed necessity in the interest of public safety. As regards the speeding on this portion of the highway by motor-cars, a visit by the inspector any Sunday afternoon -would result in a good haul of offending motorists, some of consider their main object is to see how many cars they can pass at 45 to 60 m.p.h. Now, as to Maidstone Park, great credit is due to Mr. Dalton for the improvements done there, and no doubt if his plan could be carried out, and if funds were available, the Borough would have a still more valuable asset. I often wonder -why so many visitors to the park do not avail themselves of a walk through the bush on the good tracks provided. The view of the Valley from various vantage points on the hills is a delightful one. With plenty of water available another asset to the Borough would be a swimming pool, and I feel sure would be a paying proposition. Now, what about making another move? If we want to progress we must keep hammering away to get the needs this district requires. Perhaps our new Government will interest themselves in the matter, by encouraging people to come and live in the district, and this can only be done by meeting the travel-
ling- public, by reductions in railwayfares. Workers' tickets should be greatly reduced, and until this is done we cannot expect people to make their homes here. During- the past year several new houses have sprung up, and this would be more than doubled if better and reasonable access is available. Thanking you,—Yours, etc., OLD SETTLER.
