UPPER HUTT POLICE COURT.

Motor Offences. At the Upper Hutt Police Court on Tuesday, January 14th. before Mr. Lowry, S.M., Timothy Cheery -was convicted and fined £5 and costs for overloading' a vehicle. Walter Pinfold, for overloading, £2 10s. and costs. Walter Kilminster, -who appeared as owner for two lorries, was fined £6 and costs for overloading. For speeding that might be dangerous to the public, Stanley George Wyatt was fined £6 and costs, and R. A. Temple £5 and costs for the same offence. F. C. Cleghorn, for overloading - , on three charges was fined £7 and costs. In each of these cases Inspector Ainsworth appeared for Main Highways Board. Frederick Cecil Benton, for parking longer than 10 minutes in a prohibited area, was fined 10/and costs. Archibald Coulter, for parking in a prohibited area, was fined 10/and costs. Inspector Yarnell, of the Upper Hutt Borough Council, appearing for the Borough. Frank Southey, for -wandering stock, was fined 10/- and costs. Hugh Douglas, for -wandering stock, 10/- and costs, the Borough Ranger (Mr. B. Dalley) appearing for the Council. Lionel Hayden and Maurice Moeller were summoned for speeding through the Borough. Inspector Ainsworth, appearing for the Main High-ways Board, stated that in his opinion both the accused were travelling at a speed in excess of the regulations allowed. Mr. Sutherland appeared for both defendants, and pleaded not guilty, and after placing both his clients in the box and giving the inspector the opportunity of cross-examining them, asked that both charges be dismissed on the grounds of insufficient evidence. The Magistrate, addressing the Court, stated that in his opinion and after hearing both sides, he was of opinion that the evidence v/as not sufficient to convict and dismissed both cases.
