WAITAHUNA.
{From a Correspondent?)
Mining matters here are very quiet, while at Havelock they are not much better, as two or three of the claim.3,. which a few months since were payiug fair wages, have been abandoned, and the owners betaken themselves to railway and harvest work. The high winds which have prevailed during the past few days have done considerable damage to crops, and interfered with harvest work generally. You know, of course, that there is to be a new main school built at Havelock, and that we Waitahnna people will have to put up with a side school : but even for thi3 concession I suppose we ou^ht tobe truly thankful, &c. While on the subject of school matters, I may state that the teachers, Mr. D. Clarke aud Miss Clarke, have resigned, to the regret of those who feel an interest in the moral training and proper education of their children. Ido not wish to discourage intending applicants for the appointment of master ; but having for the last nine years enjoyed the services of one who. was pronounced to be, by a peraon iir authority, the best teacher in the province, we are not likely to be easily satisfied Of the lady I know but little, but from what 1 have heard, she is fittbd for a higher appointment than the one she at present holds.
In church matters we are progressing, through the indefatigable exertions of our resident Presbyterian minister, Mr. Skinner, who knows no distinction of creed, but appears to be on pleasant terms with all. Understand, Ido not mean to say that he tries to proselytise. We are to have our annual treat for the children, in the shape of a pic-nic, on Wednesday, 24th February. It will be held in Mrs. Grant's paddock, and should the weather prove favorable we expect to have a day's thorough enjoyment. All children in the district are invited, and ifc is hoped the parents will allow as many of t their children as convenient #0 ba preßeirfr. -•
1 The failway bridge, which crosses the Waitahuna river below Havelock, is being pushed on under the able supervision of Wh\ Greig, who took the direction of matters, in connection therewith on bis partner, Mr. Goodfellow, meeting with ; an accident a week or two ago, and which necessitated his removal to Lawrence formedical treatment.
