TAPANUI.

(From our own Correspondent.)

Tapanui is at present unusually dull, as most places are after a race meeting. Some fresh excitement has been created, as will be seen by the Court report.

1 have to protest against ,the unwarrantable charge which appears in the, "Evening Star " against our telegraphist, and to flatly deny the assertions made by that journal. The Telegraphist was at his post the whole of the afternoon, and would have delivered the messages but

owing to the fact which must be known to the " Star," that our line is only a single one, and messages have to be transmitted through the Clinton office, delays in the transmission of messages to the Tapamii offices are very frequent. The " Star " should be more careful in publishing unfounded charges against a public officer, especially when that gentleman has given every satisfaction to the public during his sojourn here. It is therefore to be hoped that the "Star" will make the amende honourable.

I see by your special reporter's account of our races, a statement to the effect that the Good Templars had a booth on the course without any right thereto. Allow me to inform you that the Good Templars purchased the right from the Jockey Club for one guinea, which the Club acknowledged to have received.— [Our reporter was informed by one of the leading members of the Jockey Club that the Good Templars had not paid for the site for their booth. [Ed. " T.T."]
