THE TORRES STEAIT MAIL,

We clip from the Melbourne Argus of January 27th, the following items of news brought by the Torres Strait mail : —

Th*> Rev. Dr. Burdon was installed as Bishop of Victoria on the 31st ult. Woolner, A.R.A., is the new R.A., vice Mr. Foley. Fearful gales have occurred on the British coast. The Grand Lodge of Freemasons of Ireland have made the following appointments : — Duke of Abei-corn, G. M. ; Marquis Headfort, S.G.W.f Lord Dunboyne, J.G W. ; Viscount Bernard, G.S.; Hon. David Plunkett, M.P., S.G.D. Lord Powerscot was offered and refused J.G.W. A great factory strike has taken place in Scotland. Mr. Disraeli has recovered. Lieut. Cameron has sailed round the south of Lake Tanganyika. Mr. Stanley, i left Bagga Woya on the 15th November. Herr George, who gained notoriety by his encounter with Bismarck -in the Reichstag, was for many years amanuensis to Dr. Do'linger. The ship Jason, from London to Sydney, having taken fire, put back to Dungeness. The police of Paris have seized a Bonapartist almanac. Sir John Karslake has lost hiseyesighb. The Pope is in good health.
