Melbourne, January 27th. The Ministry return this evening from their Tasmanian trip. The Rev. Philip Bailhaclie has been selected as the Bey. Charles Clark's successor. The Torres Straits mail steamer Bris--bane, arrived at Townsville yesterday, with O'Ferrall, the Lands Office defaulter, on board. A conference of the members of the various transit of Venus parties will be held at Melbourne next month. The Panama mail steamer Japan was burned on the passage from San Francisco to Hong Kong, with 483 passengers on board ; 117 were saved. Ballarat, January 14. A youth, 20 years of age, James M'Nair, was arrested to-night for stealing lewt. of quicksilver, valuta £40, from the Sovereign Company. Sandhurst, January 24th. A Melbourne amateur sciiller offers to back himself for £200 to row 750 miles in 15 days, or a thousand miles in 21 days.
