ROXBURGH.
(From our own Correspondent.)
The ceremony of laying the foundation stone of the bridge across the Molyneux took place on the 29th inst., in the presence of a large section of the community, who turned out for the occasion. The stone was laid by John Beighton, Esq., Mayor of Roxburgh, who dilated on the great advantage the bridge would be to^ one and all, as it was a free bridge, and would always be open to the public. The accompanying memorandum was, along with a copy of the last Tuapeka Times, put in a bottle, and then placed in a cavity made for the purpose under the stone. On the stone — a very large one of several tons — being placed in position, thp Mayor pronor|rhced it well
and truly laid, and then invited Shose present to partake of refreshments which were most liberally provided by the Municipal Council. There was a kind of pic-nic on the occasion, when " Kiss in the Ring," and other games were indulged in, and one and all seemed highly pleased with themselves and with each other.
The Town Council held their usual meeting on the 25th inst., when several matters were dealt with, and the Town Clerk was instructed to take the necessary steps to compell M 'Donald and party to turn out their water jnto the creek for the use of the township. The most of the crops are now got in, and from what T hear they are likely to turn out well. The Good Templars are making a lot of headway in this distrist. They have now 39 members gbod on the books, and others to foilow next lodge night. They hold their meetings on every alternate Friday evening. j The river is still very high, and as yet no work doing on the claims. The following is the memorandum above referred to :—.: — . " This foundation stone of the Roxburgh Bridge was laid this day by John Esq., Mayor of the Municipality of Roxburgh, in the presence of the following gentlemen being the members of the Municipal Council : — Messrs George Forbes Mackay, David Cormack, Peter Boyd, James Woodhonse, James Beighton, Patrick Ormond. " The bridge was designed by D. L. Simpson, Esq., Engineer, and is to be erected by Messrs Hayes and M'Donald, contractors, at a cost of £5000. W. L. Begg, Esq., being the Inspector of Works. "This bridge will be the largest in the colony on the same principle. Its cost of erection is defrayed by the Provincial Government, Jas. Macandrew, Esq., |being the Superintendent of the Province. " Dated this 29th January, 1875, " John Beighton, Mayor."
