TUAPEKA RACES.
SECOND DAY. . The weather of this day was fortunately dry, although the heat was very oppresive, the themometer registering close on 90 degrees in the shade. The attendance was much larger than on the first day T although nothing approaching the number of visitors of former years put in an appearance. The racing throughout the meeting was. excellent. Saturday's programme commenced with the Members' Handicap, which Fenian won, despite his having to give weight to his opponents of the previous day. Tho Jockey Club Handicap was the next race. For this event, Tripoiis had: been made s \ warm favorite over night, with Right Bower next in request. As the' time for starting came, Mr. Coombe's horse cams with *a rush in the betting, and started at ' nearly : level money. The contest was a splendid one. the whole field keeping closely together up to about half-a-mile from the winning post, when Eight Bower took up the running ; Tripoiis, at the same time, came through his horses. He could not, however, catch the Bower, who passed the stand about four lengths in advance. The owner of Tripoiis, who was present at the scale when the rider of Right Bower was weighed-in, entereda proteston the ground that the lad was not weight. The clerk of the scales declared tho rider weight, and ordered him off the scale. The protest was afterwards considered by the stewards, who upheld the decision of the weigher. The Novel Race was wou by Border Lad, after a good contest. He fetched £26 at the hammer, which went to swell the funds of the Club. The Hack * Race was won by Sultana, and the Consolation by Kathleen. At the conclusion of the programme, a Hospital Race was got up, for which three horses started, a pony, the property of Mr. R. Sutherland, winning. Another horse, the property of the same gentleman, bolted, and knocked down aboy, bruising him severely. The rider escaped unhurt, but the mar© was injured by coming in contact with a post. The same animal ran through the crowd at Waitah.unar.iees, narrowly escaping doing some serious injury. It is a pity that the owners of such animals allow them to compete on a racecourse where they are likely at any moment to do serious mischief. The following is » description of the different event 3 :—: — Membees' Handicap, of 25 soys. Sam» conditions as District Handicap. IJmile. Mr. W. Quin's Fenian, Bst 41b (T. Cotton) 1 Mr. J. Monaghan's Bismarck, 9st 41b (J. Malone) 2 Mr. H. Telford's German Louis, 7st 10lb (Batty) 3 Color Sergeant and Border Lad were scratched. Fenian took the lead from the jump and was never caught, passing the post an easy winner ; four lengths separating second and thiid horses. Tuapeka Jockey Club Handicap, of 75 soys., with a sweepstake of 2 guineas added ; the amount accruing from sweep to be given to the second horse. Mr. G-. Coombe's Eight Bower, 73t 3lb (Bresuell) 1 Mr. J. Monaghan's Tripoiis, 7st 121 b (J. Malone) 2 Mr. T Pollock's Both well, 6st 12lb (Smith) 3 Mr. H. Goodman's Pertobo,7st 51b (Allen) 0 This was a splendid race throughout, Bothwell going away with the lead, being closely followed by the others. Passing the stand the second time, all the horses were together. At the coal pit, Right Bower drew away, and was never headed, although Malone made most strenuous efforts with Tripoiis. Bothwell was a bad third, and Pertobe npwhere. Novel- Eace, a handicap of 50 soys. \\ mile.: The winner to be sold by auction, with ' his engagements, and the whole of the proceeds to go to the f unds^ Mr. TV Dwyer's Border Lad," 7st ,61b 1 (Smith) 1 Mr. W. Quin's Fenian, Bst (Cotton) 2 Mr. : H. Telford's German Louis, 7st 6lb (Batty) 3 Mr. M. Monaghan's Color Sergeant O Border "Lad got away with the lead and' never was caught, although Fenian ran 1 him hard at the finish. Louis wasa.good third, and the Sergeant nowhere. Hack Race, of 10 soys. 1 mile heats : catch weights. Mr. A. M'Kay's Sultan , _j (T.Allen) 11 Mr. J. Low's Chinaman . (Smith) 3 2 Mr. Pollock's Allandar (Dunn) ' 2 0 Both heats were easily won by, Sultana. Allander was withdrawn afttr the first heat. His rider's bodily weight was only 4st 131bs; and for his size, the lad rode remarkably well. Consolation Handicap, of 20 soys. 1 mile. Mr. H. Goodman's Kathleen, 6st (Allen) 1 Mr. A. M'Kav's Unknown, Bst 4lb (T. Cotton) 3 Captain Hutchison's Earl of Lynne, 7st (Smith) 3 Sonnambula, with 7st 121 b, was scratched. After two false starts, the three were got well away, Earl of Lynne soon going to the front ; but after going about a mile, he fell back, and Kathleen went to the front, and won by about two lengths from Unknown ; the Earl aß?d third. We must congratulate the Jockey Club on their excellent arrangements thioughout the meeting. The races were ~aH^, started within a few minutes of the adver-c tised time, and with the exception of the protest with regard to the weighing-iriof Right Bower's jockey, no hitch of any; kind occurred. Mr. Kitching acted aa Judge the first day, and Mr. J. F. Herbert the second. Mr. Sheath acted' in the capacity of Starter. The Grand 1 Stand was fairly patronised on both days, but owing to the hill at the back of it affording such an excellent view of the course, a stand erected on the site of the present one will never be largely patronised/ The book-making fraternity was well represented, but the business done by them was uot of a heavy character. Rain, which. had been threatening some time, commenced to fall just as the last race was run, causing a regular stampede for home, and the Tuapeka. race meeting of 1875 was brought to a close. The settling took place at the Victoria Hotel at ten o'clock on Saturday night, and passed off satisfactory.
