NOTES ON THE TUAPEKA RACES.
By Sportsman.
Since my last commujucatinn the following horses have arrived to fulfil their engagements :- -Pertrobe, Knvy, Eirl of Lynne, Tripolis, Bismarck, Mr. T. Pollock with Bothwell, Captain Conk, Rosina, Shaw, and Alander, and Mr. dnimbe's two, Flying Dutchman and Right Bower. On Monday mornintr most of the horses were doing good work after their Sunday's rest. 'I he showers that fell on Saturday oight and -unday having made the course good, ;>nd the Cub Tiaving had some repairs done to the running gronnd, galloping could be done wth safety. On Tuesday all the horses here were galloping, and from day break up till eight o clock the few people that ass-mbled on the course had a good opportunity of seeing the cracks perform. Of Keay's team is most fancied. Traitor has wot gained much in public favour owing to his awkward style of galloping, and lip also appears to be .sligh 4 ly lame. I his horse ran second for the Canterbury Cup, and as far as his breeding is concerned it is unexceptional '/'admore gallops strong and well, and he should be near winning the Lawrence Handic>p if he starts. D. Reay's two year old, Daniel O'Rourke, i» a strong colt, and should perform well before the end of the season. He now looks rather short of work, and it is doubtful if he will be started here Bismarck, Unknown Envy, Pertrobe, Kathleen, Earl of Lynne, , ami several oT~the district horses were striding along at. a good pace. Unknown is a great deal fancied from his strong s'yle of going, and several wagers have been taken against his winning the Lawrence Handicap. Earl of Lynne appeared to be going well, but he 'has performed so "badly in public that very few people will be inclined to invest their money on him. Tripolis and Bismarck are both going well, "though tbe colt does not appear to extend himself very freely. Kathleen has been doing good work here this last fortnight, and if nothing goes amiss with her she will strip very tit on Thursday. Envy and Petrobe do not appe ar to be much- fancied though they are both doing good work and should race well at this meeting. Until the acceptances appear it will be very hard to spot the likely winner nf the Lawrence Handicap, but according to performances ' ripolis and Tadmore have the best of the weights, and if started one of the two should win. There are several horses here for the Maiden Plate, and whichever Reay elects to send Traitor, Sonnambula, or Daniel O'Kourke, should win. The only local horses to contend against them are Young Roebuck (winner of the iVlaiden at WaitaJiuna), and i colt by Scud, who is yet very green. These two will have verylitt'e show with Traitor, if be is anything! like tit ; and there chance of winning may he looked upon as very remote. Good contests may be expected for the district Handicaps Us all the horses likely to start for them are going well. The Flying Handicap should also make a good race as there are several horses here that can travel the distance well but cannot go beyond it. With fine weather there is every probability of the meeting being successful. A large number of visitors have already arrived, and the demand for accommodation at the Botels is assuming proportions that will tax the utmost efforts of the proprietors to provide The course is now in fair order for the meeting, and the erection of the Grand Stand is being rapidly preceded with.
