Auckland, January 12th. Mr Alex. Paunders reports : — Buyers of Bank of New Zealand. £18 4s ; North Shore, 15s ; Cnre, 4s 9d ; sellers of Fiji, £3 2s ; National Insurance £1 7s 6d ; City ofcsiLondon, £L 10s ; South British, £2 10s ; sales of South British, £2 8s 6d. Geahamstown, January 12th. A correspondent of the "Evening Star," writing from Ohinemuri, says the notices issued by Mr M'Kay and others against the prospecting are disregarded, and the Natives offer no opposition. One party showed some nice specimens of alluvial gold, but no guarantee is given that it was obtained there. One prospector who has been out a week expressed doubts as to the presence of gold, but reports fine specimens of silver ore The Parawai Natives are about to form themselves into a Volunteer company. It is stated that a speciaLprize will be offered at ' the Colonial meeting for competition by 1 Nafci\ es. January 14th. The Ron, S. W. Hastings, the leading Good Templar, from America, addressed a public meeting last night on the liquor traffic. There was a large attendance. Mr. Hastings is a good speaker. He was entertained at lunch to-day by the Good Templars. Hokitika, January 12th. The steamer Otago took for Melbourne 14,7520z of gold shipped from Westland, and about equal quantities from Hokitika and Greymouth. There are also 5000oz waiting shipment by the Tararua to-day, making a total value of over £79,600 shipped from Westland during the week. Christchurch, January 12th. At the inquest on the body of the^nurdered girl, the evidence against Mercer was exceedingJj|Strong. He has been remanded for eight days for further evidence. January 14th. At a meeting of the Astronomical Society, this afternoon, it wall resolved that the Secretary be requested to confer with Major Palmer, R.E., as to the advisability of purchasing the transit instruments and sidereal clock, with a view of taking time here for regulating the time-ball apparatus purchased by the Provincial Government ; and that the Council be authorised to incur an expenditure for that purpose not exceeding £200. Lyttelton, January 14th. The Elizabeth Graham has cleared for London, with a cargo valued at £83,000. Wellinoton, January 14th. Government have not yet received any communication from the Agent-General with reference to the loss of the Cospatrick. The Summer Horticultural Show -was opened by the Marquis and Marchioness of Normanby to-day. The Adamant has sailed for London.
