Dunepis, January 6, 7,45 p.m. A fisherman named Henry Coutts brought intelligence to Port Chalmers at 4 o'clock this afternoon that another fisherman named George Aldridge, living at the Heads, had suddenly dropped down dead tinder suspicious circumstances. The police proceeded to the Heads. Single girls by the Nelson, engaged today, were as follows : — As domestics and cooks — four at £25 j-two' at £32 ; one at £34 ; nine, at £30.; one at £35 ; two at £36 ; and one at £40 ; one married dbuple at £80 ; and one farm servant at £40, At the adjourned meeting of the education Board to-day, the Board resolved that the recommendation of Alex. Wilson, M.A., by the Hi^h School Board of Advice, for the appointment of English master,of the High School, bo confirmed. N. Montalk was appointed French visiting master of the same institution. Mr. Wilson's salary will be £300 per annnm, and one twelfth- of school fees.' Mr. Wilson arrived at Auckland a. few months since from Home. In the Supreme Court to-day Judge Chapman sentenced, Isabella Lyle to six months' imprisonment and hard labor. Tlie case against George Jones for arson at Tokomairiro was partly heard. Chbistchtjbch, Jan. 5. The Hon. Mr. Boweu, in addressing the. electors of Kaiapoi yesterday evening, expressed the opinion that the Immigration and Public Works' Policy was the first nail in the coffin of Provincialism ; but the task was no light one for Parliament, and the disestablishment of Provinces would probably not b 9 completed in two or three sessions. They need not at present touch the South Island. He thought it possible to have one Land Law for the whole .Colony, and. £2 an acre fixed as a fair price. Mr. Bowen said he had only accepted a seat in the Legislative Council, when- called on, the understanding that , he would be free to offer himself as a candidate for a vacancy in the lower house.
