COURT STAR OF TUAPEKA, A.O.F.
The sixth anniversary of Court Star was celebrated in the AthenEeumHall, by a soiree aud ball, on New Year's Eve. The weather 'was very favorable,- and the attendanee^.was . good. -The .tea .was of 'an excellent character, there being jevery dainty that ' could be thought of, arid all the fruits of the season in abundance. "The tables were presided over by MesdamesjW. Hay, Fraer, Downie, Gilmour, M'Taggart, and Titchener; and Mademoiselles, Campbell, Murray, Pope, Lizzie Hay, aijd Luriua Hay. Court Havelock was very well represented, and the kindred societies of Oddfellows at Lawrence, Blue Spur, and Waitahuna were also well represented.
Bro. S. A. Miller. C.R., occupied the chair, and in the Course of the evening called upon Bro. Fraer, JP.C.K., who, in the unavoidable absence of the >ecretary, made the financial statement. He much regretted Mr. Thompson's absence, as.tq him the Court, to a very great extent, 'was due its piesent flourishing condition. He (Bro. Fraer) was a strong believer in Forestry, and looked upon it as baaed upon the- highest philanthrophic principle— that of the well-being of our fellownien, and fitted to' exercise the best of our social feelings in the relief of the sick and distressed. From the statement he thought Court Star had succeed in accomplishing that object. The Court had a membership of 81, 16 of whom had joined during the past year. The sum of £53 had | been disbursed in sick flay to 14 members. Financially, the Court was in a healthy ! state. The sum of £100 was invested on freehold security, at 8 per cent ; and the current account in the bank showed a credit of £66 10s. lid. The^Court property amounted to £45, giving a*total of over £200. Bro. Cairns", Secretary of Court ETavelock, handed in a statement of the position of hia Court, which also was very satisfactory. The general fund, at^ the close of December, stood at £92 11s. 2d., showing an increase of £24 15a 9d. during the last quarter. The Court had also property to the value of £68, making a total of £160 11s. 2d. at the close of the year. After a short interval, the ball was opened. ' There was a large crowd of ladies and gentlemen eager for the dance. We should say there must have been between sixty and seventy couple present, besides a number of ■onlookers; ,and the music provided was of the very best description by the Waitahuna Quadrile Band, which cannot be surpassed for dance music. Although the night was very close and warm-, the large company present enjoyed th%iriselv6s to the full, and the ball did not break up till far on in the morning. ,
