LAWRENCE TOWN COUNCIL.
The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Council was held on Monday evening last. Present : The Mayor, and Councillors Walker, Middlemiss, Cox, and Fraer.
The minutes of previous meetings were read and confirmed.
A telegram from Mr. A. W. Morris, re the £3000 loan, was received.
A letter from Messrs Ferguson and Mitchell, with information as to the supply of debenture f orms, was received.
A report from D. Cochran (surfaceman), recommending that certain works be done, was received and referred to the Public Works Committee, with power to act. A letter from Mr Jofih Menzieß, asking the Council to adopt the suggestion of the Resident Magistrate and accept the Bame rating for the two previous years as he was paying for currant one. Also asking the Council not to saddle him with the court expenses. Cr. Fraer moved, and Cr Cox seconded, " That this council is of opinion that to reduce the rates on Mr. Menzies' property, >as sued tor, would be totally unjust to those ratepayers who had duly paid all rates for the last three years on their -respective properties." — Carried.
A letter was received from Mr. W. H. Smith, Inspector- of Works, stating that Mr! Lawson Lad inspected the Town Hal} building, and recommended that the staircase tq the upper storey should be taken.from the back of the entrance hall and through the corner of one of the shops, thereby effecting a large saving of room in the hall which wi",

otherwise M taken up by the landing under the present plan. Cr Fraer moved, and Cr. Walker seconded, « That the alterations in the staircase of the Town Hall be approved of, and that Mr. Law§on be requested to furnish the council with »n estimate of the same." — Carried. A letted was reooived from Messrs Mears and Wbittet, offering to make the above alterations for the sum of £75. A letter was received from Mr. Or. Young, •sking that a footbridge be placed in Camia street. Referred to the Public Works Committee, with power to act. .The following accounts were received andref erred to the Finance Committee : — Mears and Whittet, progress payment on the Town Hall, £500 j R. Tuckey, 10s ; D. Cochran (surfaceman), £10 ; E. Titchener, Inspector of Nuisances, £7 10s ; W. Mears, drawing plans of weighbridge office, £1 Is ; G. Jeffery, £1 16s 6d; A. Armstrong (rent), £6; T. Keleher, £2 ss : J. Long, £4 5s 6d. Cr Fraer was elected a member of the Finance and Legislative Committees. A letter was received from Mr. A. Thorn Police Inspector, re a trespass in Pladdastreet. Cr. Fraer moved, and Cr. Cox seconded. " That with the consent of his superior officer, Sergeant Farrell be appointed Inspector of Nuisances, at a salary of £15 per annum." — Carried. Cr FraeV moved, and Cr Middlemiss seconded, " That the sum of £3 3s be given to the Grammar School Committee for distribution in prizes at the forthcoming examination." — Carried. Cr Fraer moved, and Cr Cox seconded, " That a letter be sent to Mr. W. D. Morrison, intimating that unless he signed the conr tract for the extension of the water mains within seven days, his deposit would be forfeited." — Carried. The Finance report was then read and adopted. Cr Fraer drew the attention of the Mayor to clause 38 of tho Municipal Corporation Ordinance, 1865, which provides that notices of meetings be sent by the Town Clerk to the three days prior to meetings, in cases of emergency. Cr. Fraer observed that advertisements in connexion with the recent election had appeared in the Tuapeka Times oftener than was required. The Mayor explained that itesijjas an oversight of the manager of the paper. Cr Fraer suggested that in future the Council table be furnished with an ample »upply of writing materials and blotting paper. ' Cr. Fraer moved a vote of thanks to the chair, and the meeting then closed.
