ALEXANDRA
(From our own Correspondent.) November 27th. It has been proposed to hold the Alexandra School examination rather 'earlier this year, as it is rumoured thatsome cases of measles have occurred in the district, and it is feared that should any of the scholars be attacked it might be fouud necessary to close the school, and thus prevent the annual examination from taking place. A meetiug was held at the Bendigo Hotel, on the 24th inst., for the purpose of making arrangements for holding some sports during the Christmas holidays. After some discussion, it was resolved to have a day's racing on New Year's Day. Collectors were appointed to canvas for subscriptions,' ' a considerable [amount being subscribed^ in the room, and the meeting then adjourned for a week, when the programme will be drawn up for . publication. • It has long been proposed to take steps to obtain a public hall in Alexandra, the present Library Hall being far too small for out Bocial gatherings, but hitherto no Action has been taken in the matter. It ( says. little for the gallantry of our citizens that' the Bubject has been allowed to lie so long in abeyauce. and I think the fair sex have just cause to complain that there is no suitable room in Alexandra in which they ' can meet to' enjoy themselves without undergoing an amount of crushing that must effectually "deprive them of all pleasure in attending. Whatever thr? advocates of woman's rights may say^ about woman being adapted to undergo all the work at present performed by the male sex, it is certain that women dp not take kindly to masculine amusements.. Cricket, does not interest them ; the seductions of cigars and P.B. offer them no attractions ; arid even the chasteninginfluence of Devils Pool fails to satisfy the highest aspirations of their- nature. In thinly populated districts, the only' events that break the^weary monotony of their lives, are the social gatheringsamateur concerts and" the like — to which they can -accompany their lords and masters, and prevent them from- getting into mischief. It is calculated to evoke .oneVsyinpathy and compassion to see the ladies batheiir occasions, after being half ! stifled in an. over crowded room, iorcing their way^ through the crowd to the utter j join pf their toilets ; and with an amount ! \ .of heroism that is . almost sublime, enxJeavouring to smile as, if they hail been •enjoying themselves ; and it speaks - «rnlmne» Io? the forbearance and long- • suffering, of the sex, that none of .the gentlemen have had their eyei 'scratched . -out , .*s -a punishment for theiriieglect and ■ indifference. , Woman wants but little feere below; i. and in common fairness to \ her, £hat should be of the best ,)quality available; iand I trust 1 that this -chapter-o^cwoman's wrongs may have the . eflfeet of rousing the gentlemen' to action. . Ttie riecaasity for a larger hall has long been conceded, and although there may be difficulties in' the way of its erection, it requires hut united action on the .part -*tihe mkahii&sim to oarry i€ out aucceas-
