(Before E. H. Carew, Esq., R.M. ) Fbidat, 27th November, 1874. Police v. William Maddan. — Charge of .stealing a ewag, valued at £2, the property of Alexander MTherson, at Waimate, in Canterbury. Mr. Thompson conducted the case for the police. Constable Nicholson deposed that he firstknew prisoner in the Lawrence gaol, and pro.duced the police Gazette for the province of Canterbury from which it appeared that -.the i «wag had been stolen and the accused suspected ; the description of accused tallied with that given in tho Gazette. Arrested the | •prisoner in Lawrence with a_ swag 'in hio pos- i cession containing goods similiar to those said to hare been stolen. The accused admitted he had been in Waimate in August last. Mr. Thompson asked for a remand, to Ascertain when the next vessel left for Waimate, with a view to a further remand. The prisoner had no objection. Remanded accordingly. Cox v. Hopewell— Claim of £4 7s 7d. The claim was admitted, with the exception of a charge of £1 10s for board, and 16s 6d "balance of account. It was also said jbh&t 10s had been paid to James Godwin, Mr. Cox's etoreman at Waipori, but not placed. fco his credit. The 16s 6d wa3 given up by the plaintiff as ho had not his books. Mr. Godwin' acknowledged that the 10s was teceiyed, but this was placed to another account for f omething whu-b it was illegal to sell.
