(From the Dunedin Dailies. ) Wellington, Nov. 10th. Sir George Arney goes to Auckland on tho 20th to be in readiness to swear in the new Governor, who is to arrive about that tune. Arrived : Star of India, with 375 immigrants, 103 days from London. The Strathnaver case comes on next week. The vessel is beiug detained at a cost of £40 per day demurrage. The following tenders have been received at tho Public Works Office for the construction of the Waimea water-race : — William Smith, nokitika, £19,492. accepted. Declined — James Thompson, £21,143 ; Cullcn' Ttntl- J>ea.-_3Q, 146 ; Stenhouse and Co, £29,890 ; M'£i3lr-3 : ~»fc_-e32,95 r 7 ; JW.-&r-ans, 423,131, all of Hokitika. " During tha passage of the Star of India five deaths occurred ; three were children and two were father and child. In a fit of temporary insanity he seized tho child and jumped overboard. There were 10 births. There is no sickness now. Commenting upon Sir George Grey's petiition the " Times " points out that amongst the last of his official acts as Governor, was the transmission to the Secretary of State of a memorandum by Mr. Stafford, in relation to the County of Westland Act, in which the Imperial Parliament w-as invoked to grant to the New Zealand Legislature that very power to make alteration in the Constitution of the Colony. Nov. 11th. Madame Arabella Goddard gave her opening performance last night. There was a steady downpour of rain, but the house was full, and Bhowers of bouquets were thrown. Mrs Smythe was encored. It is understood on undoubted authority, that on tho conclusion of the Court of Appeal Sittings, Judge Chapman will be removed to Auckland. His Excellency leaves Wellington at the end of the present week or early next week. November 12th. There' was a much greater demand for tickets for Madame Goddard's second concert than for the former one. She intends giving only two more. Auckland, Nov. 10th. The prospectors who have recently been to the Ohinemuri country report having discovered payable reefs. Arrived : — Barque Chocolate, 59 dayß from San Francisco, with 300 tonß barley. Nov. 11th. It is reported that the Superintendent and
Provincial Secretary proceed to England by the next steamer, to an'ange for special settlement under the new Auckland Waste Lands Act. November 12th. The Superintendent's contemplated trip to England, " accompanied by the Provincial Secretary, is condemned by the " Cross " and " Hcralci." Alexandra, Nov. 11th. The natives at Kuiti are in desperate straits for food, and are trying to raise advances on their crops. Napier, November 12th. At the R.M. Court to-day, the chief mate and nine of the crew of the Rosalia were charged by the captain with refusing to proceed in the vessel, on the alleged ground that she is unseaworthy. Captain 3?airehild, of the Luna, deposed that in his opinion the Rosalia was seaworthy, or at all events suflleiently so to proceed to Dunediu. The mate, D. Reid, was sentenced to twelve weeks' imprisonment, and the others to lesser periods, with hard labour. The Rosalia will take a fresh crew, and will most likely proceed to Duuedin immediately. Christchurch, Nov. 12th. The Metropolitan Agriucltural Exhibition to-day was a great success. The weather was glorious, and there was an immense attendance. There was 221 exhibitors of sheep, 91 of cattle, 114 of horses, 15 of pigs, 19 of poultry, I'l< of dogs, 47 of implements, 27 ef dairy produce, and 51 of local manufactures. The sheep, cattle, horses, and implements were of splendid quality. There was close competition in every class. Messrs Sutton Brothers, of Southland, took the Champion Medal for Lincoln Rams.
