TAPANUI.
The following petition has been numerously signed and forwarded to his Honor the Superintendent :— To his "Tlonor James Macandrew, Esq., Superintendent, Province of Otago.
The petition of the undersigned inhabitants of Tapanui, Glenkenich, and surrounding districts, tjimbly shewefch.
1. That ttere is a great necessity for COUltnencingfthe road works between the Waipahi and the township of Tapanui, via the Pomahaka bridge, as waggoners have been delayed this spring more than tliree weeks through the 'flooding of the river. We may also beg of your Honor to cause the sum not hitherto expended, though voted on last year's estimates, to be spent in addition to that voted for the present year.
2. That your petitioners would also draw your Honor's attention to the necessity of Laving a bridge across the Pomahaka in a direct line with the township, making the road to the deferred payment settlers about three miles, the presenfc_jrpacl being eight. The deferred payments meant are on Mackenzie, jLogan, and M'lniyre's runs. One of the great benefits derived from said road would be the facility afforded to the above settlers in sending their children to the district school. The above road would also diminish the distance to Waikaka considerably.. 3. Your humble petitioners would also remind your Honor of an old promise made, that A land office should be eitablished in this township. The land in the neighborhood being principally agricultural, it would be a caving to the applicants of travelling 40 miles to Lawrence, or 72 to Invercargill. 4. Another great drawback to our thriving township is the limited jurisdiction of the court. We would crave your Honor to cause the extension of the same to £50. Also, the great want of a Licensing Bench, the present license-holders having to^go to Tokomairiro, being a distance of 72 miles. 5. That your Honor will cause to be reserved from sale 500 acres of hind at Swift Creek, that place being a day's stage irom Tapanui, and being required by carriers as a camping ground in journeying from Tapanui to Roxburgh, Moa Flat, Rae's, and Beaumont ; and also that your Honor will cause a reserve to be set apart on M'lntyre's run for the same purpose. between the townships of Tapanui find Gore.
6. "We, y<?ur petitioncrß,^hunibl J pray that jour Honor, will 6ee the necessity that the management of the land reserved for a commonage for the inhabitants of Tapanui should be placed in the bands of the Progress Committee, thereby giving the township the benefit of any emoluments arising therefrom. That your Honor will take these arguments into favorable consideration, your memorialists will ever pray. — p .(Signed by about 200 inhabitants.)
