Telegraphic Despatches.
(From our own Correspondent.) Dunbdin, October 16th. The single girls, by the ship Invercargill, were brought to town and conveyed-* to the immigration barracks to-day. The American war steamer Snatara, arrived this morning at the Bluft from Hobarfc Town, and sails to-morrow for the Chatham Islands, to land her Transit of Venus scientific party. October 17, 9 35 a.m. At an enquiry into the cause of the fire at Mrs. Schmidts house Hattray sfreet,. * the jury returned a verdict to the effect, that the house was maliciously set on fire. The evidence disclosed most peculiar circumstances in connection with the affair. Several gentlemen have arrived from Australia, with the intention of attending G. M. Bell's sale at Waimea. of his shorthorned herd. An attempt was made to set fire to tha Crown Hote,l Spit, Napier, on Thursday night. A bundle of shavings were found burning underneath the billiard room. The fire was extinguished without much, damage being done.
