Mr. Yogel has met the Government of' New South Wales and the representatives of the Queensland Government, and they have come to a thorough understanding on the question of cables. The two Governments have appointed rep *esentatives to act with Mr. Yogel at Home. Mr. Russell if progressing favourably with the mail arrangements, but is likely to be declined in Sydney for some days. The libel case Steele v. Hutchinson, proprietor of the "Tribune," was heard at the Supreme Court on Monday. Mr. Travers appeared for the plaintiff, and the Attorney-General for the defendant. The, Jury after retiring for about half an hour, returned a verdict for the plaintiff, damages £20. Mr Keogh brought a similar case and the same verdict was taken by consent. The Marquis of Normandy is expected to arrive in New Zealand about the end of November. October. XStiti. The Taranaki has arrived, with the Governor on board, this afternoon. The opening of the College has been postponed until Saturday, on account of the weather, which continues wet, with high winds. New Plymouth, October 14th. The weather for the last few days has been fearfully stormy, It has cleared up to-day, and it is now calm and fine. Nelson, October 14th. A great ,deal of excitement has arisen here by the strange conduct of Mr. O'Conor, the Provincial Treasurer, last week. One Knyvett presented a claim for payment, certified by Mr. Dobson, -Provincial Engineer. Mr. O'Conor refused payment or to let Knyvett have the i document. Knyvett insisted on taking it away, and when O'Conor called a policeman and ordered him to take the document, and as Knyvett says, gave him in charge. He was released in about half an hour. Knyvett brought an action for illegal detention before the R.M., who gave judgment in his favor. This morning Knyvett has served Mr. O'Conor with a writ for £500 damages for false imprisonment. The last bag of flour was turned into bread yesterday. There is only about one ton of potatoes in the place and a bag or two of oatmeal.
