On dit, that Mr, Thomas Birch intends offering himself as a candidate for the representation of Mount Ida in the Provincial Council, in place of Mr. Oliver who leaves for England. The Luna with the San Francisco mails encountered a very severe gale yesterday afternoon when nearing Lyttelton. She, however, managed to make little AJtaroa Bay, and held on till midnight, when she made another start and reached Akaroa at 9 a.m. It took the steamer three hours to do the last five miles.
