TWO ACCIDENTS at WAIAREKA.

ONE FATAL.

A man named Edmund Standing, in the employ of Messrs Fleming and Hedley, started with a dray and three horses, anl a couple of farm hands fmm Incholme farm, en route to Oataaru, for stores. The Kakanui was safely crossed, Mr Kerr assisting them over, who cautioned. Standing to use care, and not to attempt to cross the Waiareka if it should be too high. Before reaching the latter stream, tbe team had to swim a;ross a bHnd gully, now, however, flooded. Deceased appears to have pushed on, notwithstanding, and in attempting to cross the Waiareka, at Mitchell's, the dray was capsized — its occupanti being washed out. Two of them reached the bank, but the driver (landing) was seen for some time hanging to the harness of the near leader. His mates shouted to him to let go his hold, and try to make for the bank, but he appeared to take no notice, and shortly afterwards he, with the horses and dray pank under water. The body of Htaudiug bad not up to yesterday afternoon been recovered. The dray and horses were found about 150 yards below where the accident occurred. The team was a valuable one, the horses heir>g worth L 65 each, and had been recently sold bat not deliwred to tbe purchaser. The deceased, Fdmund Standing, was a native of Kent, about twenty-four years of ;>ge, and wa* an immigrant per the James Nichol Fleming. Mr Edwin Collis, of Oamam, had a some- | what narrow escape on Wednesday. During the erection of a new bridge where the Waiareka crosses the Main Ruuth Road near Totara out-station the traffic necessarily has to cross the stream at the old ford. Mr Collis, who was driving a horse and buggy, was attempting to cross to the south .-ide, when, by some means or other, the horse's feet became entangled in a wire and he fell, and both buggy and horse were swept down stream.
