It is understood that the new Colonial Sank has secured the handsome and commodious premises recently erected by Edmonds, Sellars, and Co. The "New Zealand Times" says that a telegram was received here yesterday, stating that several members of the family of King Potatou are en route for Auckland, being their first visit to that City since the late war. The Stratlniaver salvage case came on at the Supreme Court to-day. The caee threatens to be exceedingly tedious and complicated. ' October 6th. Mr. Forster, chemist, whilst riding along the Ngahauranga road to day, came into collision with a vehicle, and had his leg badly crushed. The limb was afterwards amputated. Mrs. Yogel and family will go to Melbourne by tho Otago on her next trip. te The Directors of the New Zealand Steam Shipping Company haro decided to continue running then* steamers. They have sent home for "estimates and specifications for putting new compound engines into the Wellington and Turauaki ; but if mechanics of j the Colony can do the work at a reasonable j figure, it will not be sent home. Tlie Luna 13 detained to take tho Mikado's mails South on the arriral of that steamer from San Francisco* She is due about tho Bth inst. Auckland, October 2nd. The Hon. James Williamson has entered an action against the Improvement Commissioners to compel them to buy his land in Shortland-street for £5,500, the price fixed by arbitrators under the Land Clauses Consolidation Act. The Commissioners had given notice to withdraw after the award had been announced, on the ground th&t this was excessive, but Mr. Williamson's counsel contends that they cannot do co, and maintains that the award under the Act stands in the 6ame position as a judgment of a Court. The case is regarded as of great importance in connection with compulsory land-taking for public purposes. Mr. Buckland reports that fat cattle realised 37s 6d to 40s per 1001 b. . via Tauranga. On her passage she took shelter from a gale under White Island. Captain Fernandez says that he hopes never to have occasion to go there again, as tho water is so deep, that it is only just possible to bold on, while the atmosphere ts so impregnated with the sulphur dust from tho volcano that it was very unpleasant in its effects. Everyone's comploxion turned a dull leaden hue, and tho particles of dust were very irritating to the throatr The colour of the ship's paint was visibly altered. October Sth. At the opening of the Criminal Sessions this morning Judge Arney delivered a charge, and congratulated the Jury on the fact that I only ten eases were on the calendar. He lamented that there was a charge of murder, and a preponderance of offences againet tho person. New Pitmottth, October 3rd. The schooner Garibaldi, from Lyttelton, reported lost, arrived last night. She had been lying in Ship's Cove during the bad weather. ! Chbistchttech, October 2nd. At yesterdays session of the Grand Lodge of Good Templars, it was resolved to establish district lodges in Otago, Southland, | Marlborough, Nelson, and Westland. Also that a prize of £20 be offered for the best essay on the origin, progress, and objects of the order. October 3rd. The members of the German expedition for observing the transit of Venus have decided to erect an observatory at Burnham, 18 miles from Christcliurch. The mombora of the Philosophical Institute have elected them honorary members, and given them a dinner. October 5. The Criminal Sessions of the Supreme Court opened this morning. There were seventeen cases, all of an ordinary character, except three against Captain Crawford, of the ship Cathcart, jfor shooting two seamen during a disturbance on the voyage out. OAMAEtr, October 3rd. The vessel United Brothers is ashore at Papakaio Point. It is reported that she was sinking, and had apparently to be beached. Lyttelton, October sth. The Auriga sailed yesterday for London, with 443 bales of wool, 333 of flax, 155S cases of meats, 21 bales of skins, 112G sacks 300 casks of tallow and pelts, and 170 packages of sundries.
