THE STOCK ASSESSMENT.

The assessment for 1874-5 on stock depastured runß within the Province of Otago. exclusive of the late Province of Southland, was r>aid on Thursday to the Receiver of Land Revenue. The amount was £54,018 11s Bd. The number of stock assessed is, in rouud numbers, 7000 great, and 1,810,000 small cattle. v The rate of assessment is 7d per head small, and 3s 6d great. This assessment is the annual rental of the runs, and is payable on the Ist October of each year. In addition, there was payable at Invercargill, yesterday, upwards of making the total for the whole Province nearly £61,000. Tho ossessment (exclusive of Southland) for the year 1873-4 was £52,845, 17s 9d. Tho number of great cattle was 8693 j small, 1,759,701. Southland was about £7000. For the twelve months 1872-3 the same assessment was £48,374 8s 7d, and a further sum was paid at Invorcargill of £8370, making a total of £56,744.
