Messrs Dbiyer Stew art, and Co. report as follows for the week ending 23rd September. Fat Cattle. — 150 head were yarded to-day, the greater portion of which were much above the average quality, all of which were disposed of to the trade at quite equal to last week'B quotations for prime beef. Best bullocks brought from £13 to £16 10s ; medium, £7 10a to £10. Cows, from £10 to £15 for very superior ; ordinary, £5 10s to £7. Of tho number yarded we sold 66 head on account of Messrs Thomson, M'Comb, Guinness, and others, the prices realised being equal to about 35b per 100 lbs for prime quality. Fat Calves. — None yarded.
Fat Sheep. — The supply forward to-day — viz., 1600 — would not in ordinary circumstances be excessive ; but, owing to the trade being well stocked by private purchases, only 700 WOW disposed ,of. Of these also the greater portion were of fair quality. Crossbreds Bold at 17s to 2Qb ; merinos at 10 6d. Wo quofce prime mutton for forward delivery, say — crosq-b'reds at 4d to 4£d ; merino, 3id 4d per lb. Store Cattle. — We note a brisk enquiry for store cattle of all descriptions, but' more especially for grown bullocks " and spayed cows, which are saleable at from £4 to £5 10s for" the former,^ and £3 to £4 10s for tho latter.
Store Sheep. — The number offering at the present moment is very limited, and confined chiefly to old ewes and wethers, which are slow of sale. Good young sheep, however, either merino or cross-breds, are in good request, and readily saleable at our quotations, which are as follow : — Cross-breds 4 and 6tooth, 12s to 15s each ; merino wethers, 2, 4, and 6-tooth, 8s to 9s ; full-mouthed do, 7s to 7s 6d. We have sold 1100 half-breds and lOOO'merinoes at quotations. Wool. — There is little or nothing of interest to report in regard to this staple, unless it be that the London telegrams to hand down to sth inst., confirm to a great extent the advance in priceß previously reported. In our local market no business has been done during tho ■week. A few lots of fellruongers' wools are on offer, but the prices obtainable fail to meet sellers views. . Sheepskins. — There were very few butchers' skins forward for the usual sales this day' owing to the inclemency of the weather. We sold dry station skins at from Is. 6d. to ss. 4d,, according to qualify, and for green skins quote last week's rates ag current market value. Tallow.— -A few casks inferior only were
offered ue, which -wo sold at 22a. 6i. per cVfb The like advance in the price in the Home market, coupled with the daily increasing demand for local consumption, is calculated to enhance the value of this article. Hides— Were " in good demand to-day, and fetched quite equal to last week's rates. We sold 50 light to medium weights at 16b. to 17s. 6d. Hides, — Wheat continues in very slight request, and prices have a downward tendency. Prime samples of Oamaru growth may be quoted at 4s. 9d. to 55. ; inferior and medium, nominally at 4s. to 4s. 6d. Barley is also somewhat dull of sale, prime malting being worth about 55., while inferior and ordinary do not command over 4s. to 4s. 6d. Oats are in excellent demand, and apparently scarce. Milling oats are wanted for export at up to 4s. 6d. ; good feeding, for local consumption, at up to 4s. 4d.
