Janet Eggleton. — Tho accused was charged with stealing a calico tent, value 305., on the 11th instant, at Waipori. The tent belonged to James Hart, a laborer at the channel. He had left it standing empty, and lived elsewhere. On missing the tent he gave information to Constable Boyd, who found it ih the swag of the prisoner, who did not deny taking it, but said he had. no intention of stealing it. The tent bore marks of having been hastily torn away; and from the whole of the evidence given, his Worship had no difficulty in arriving at a decision. Prisoner mi found guilty, and sentenced to one month's imprisonment in Lawrence Gaol, which punishment, his Worship observed, would not have been solighthad there been any previous conviction against theprisoner known to the police. Mtytr r- O'Leavy. —Claim of £4. 195. Od. for foods supplied. There was no appearance of or for defendant ; but his Worship read a letter in which the defendant admitted his indebtedness, and forwarded £1 on account ; he also complained that his circumstances were bad, and that Mr. Meyer should not have supplied his wife with bottles of gin and porter in his absence. His Worship struck out the items for spirits, and made the observation that such cases as this very much strengthened the common arguments against the granting of bottle licenses. Judgment for £2 and the -mount paid in, £1, and costs of Court, 10s. - Cowap v. Kirwan. — No appearance. Case •truck out.
