EDUCATION BOARD.
The usual monthly meeting of the Education Board was held on the 7th instant } present — His Honor the Superintendent (in tbe chair), and Messrs Reid, TurnbuU, Stout, andHislop, secretary). ROSLYN. Messrs Ross and A. C. Begg attended as a . deputation from the Roslyn district to urge upon the Board the necessity of erecting a schoolmaster's residence in the Roalyn district. Referred to the Executive. REPAIRS AND IMPROVEMENTS. Sundry claims from the undermentioned districts for repairs and improvements were received, approved, and ref *rred to the Government for payment : — Kakanui, Balclutha, VVetherßfcone's, Waipori r Black's, East Taieri, Evan's Flat, Akatore, Blackstone's, and Milton. ST. BATHANS. An application was received from St. Bathans School Committee asking chat the amount of L6O, formerly voted for the erection of a wooden building there for school purposes, should be increased to Ll5O, as the/ purposed erecting a stone building, which they considered would be more suitable to the requirements of the district. Referred to the Government. KDENDALE. An application from this district for Ll5O for a school site was referred to the Executive. GROVE BUSH. A letter asking whether it was likely that the Government would spend any money this year towards the" erection of a school residence at Grove Bush, was referred to the Government. MAHSNO. A letter was read from the School Committee at Maheno, reminding the Board that the sum of Ll5O had been formerly promised towards the erection of school buildings there. Referred to the Executive. OAMARU.
A letter was read from tha Oamara School Committe, stating that, in consequence of the Rector of the Grammar School saving at their last meeting reported that the school was overcrowded, they had procured temporary accommodation for 100 pupils, at a cost of L7O. They expected that this item would b 8 passed for paytuent by the board. Referred to the Government. OUTRAM. The School Committee at Outram wrote stating that there were 100 scholars on the rail of that school, and, in order to provide sufficient accommodation for them, it was necessary to build another class-room, which would probably cost LI BO. Subscriptions in aid of the building had already been promised to the araoaut of LSO, and they asked for LIBO. * Referred to the Government. WOODLANDS AND INCH VALLEY. The Library Committee* of Woodlands and Inch Valley wrote asking tbe sanction of the Board to their library rules. The rules were approved on condition that a rule be added providing that the books and property should cot be alienated at any time. TTNCERTIFICATED TEACHERS. The Board sanctioned the employment of tbe following teachers at the undermentioned places : — Mr John Wright, Kyeburn ; Mr George Mossgrove, Sandymount j Miss Marsh, Kawarau Gorge ; Mr Peowrie, Edendale. THE ALBANY STREET SCHOOL. Mr Montgomery wrote requesting that two pupil teachers might be appointed for that school. The application was sanctioned. INVERCAP.GILL AND WALTON. The applications for a pupil teacher for the Invercargill District •School, and another for the Walton School, were also approved. The Board also decided to increase the rent allowance in lieu of teacher's residence in connection with the Inrercar^ili District School, from L2O to L 35. CLEVELAND. A memorial was read from a number of settlers at Cleveland, asking what assistance the Board would give towards tbe establishment of a side school there. They stated that there were twenty-four children under four years of age, aud fifty-one between four and fourteen years, in that locality, and that the Waikouaiti and Merton schools were too far away to enable their children to 'attend. "' Referred to the school committees of the. adjoining districts— Merton and Waikpuaiti. HILL-END. An application was read, asking that § School might be established' in the ■outhern division of the Hill-end and Waitahuna districts. The application was adjjonraed until further particulars should have been obtained. Stewart's island^ A letter was read from the Rev. Mr Sfcobp enclosing a minute of the Southland Preahytery in reference to providing instruction fcty the Maoris and half-caste ehjldrsa a,t Stet wart's Island . The Secretary? I may state, your Hanoi 1 , that I replied to Mr Stobo informing him that the Board had already made provision for the instruction of European children at Half -Moon Bay by Mr Peterson. Mr Stobo answered that Mr Peterson was located at too «reat a distance from where the children to whom he referred resided. I thought that as tke Board had already made provision for the European children, and as provision was made for the instruction of the Maoris and half-castes by the * olonial Government, the matter was one for the latter to take into consideration. Air Stout thought it a pity +hat all the Native schools in the Province were not under the control of the Board. The decision of the Board was that application sho«ld be made to the Native School Department;. THE DRAWINO-CLASSES. Mr Hntton wrote stating that, in consequence of the increase ia the number of students attending the drawing-classes, more eaaels, pedestals, box-seats, &c, were necessary. Referred to the Executive. " "" ' ADAM'S SUKIf The BECRETAKY reported that the teacher at the above schodl was leaving in 'consequence of the 'decrease in the jjopurasiori~in tfhiit district. 1 He did. not, in 1 consequence ol this fact, feel warranted 'in appointing another teacher for that' school withouthaving first brought the matter under the iiwtic* of the Board, " '"* Consideration was deferred,. GREBN ISLAND. A letter was read from Mr Thomas EUng, secretary of the Green Island School Committee, demurring to, a claim for Ll4 3s as per letter from the Board dated June 20. Tb,e Board resolved to adhere to its former decision.
ADJOURNMENT. The Board adjourned for a week.
