LAWRENCE TO CLYDE.

(To Hie Editor) * Sib, — In an article in the " Dunsfcan Times " of the 11th instant, the writer has tried to explain with -great care the benefit that would accrue to that immenso city -were the traffic taken in a direct line from Tuapeka through Clyde to tbe Lakes. Now, this is only meant to throw dust in the eyes of those at a distance, for everyone conversant with the road knows that the traffic from Dunedin to the Lakes must of necessity pass through Clyde under all circumstances ; but everyone don't know that if a bridge were erected at Clyde, at a cost of ten thousand pounds, and a new road made direct to Clyde at a cost of ten thousand more, this immense waste of money woidd be made solely that the traffic would be diverted from Alexandra, -which could in no way benefit Clyde, except as it does at present. I consider when any action is taken to injure one particular place, especially -when it is -well known the injury inflicted will not benefit anyone, the editor of a local newspaper, which is kept up by the people, should be the very last person to be found so acting. If he persists in attempting to destroy a district from which he derives the greater part of his support for the benefit of a few of his special friends, he at least ought to be exposed. I hope our Alexandra friends have not so far forgotten their old spirit as to let such a gross misapplication of public money take place, and allow their town to be quietly snuffed out without a determined show of resistance. — I am, &c, Etha. Alexandra, 12th September, 1874.
