(From the Dunedin Dailies. ) INTERPROVINCIAL NEWS. Wellington, August 25th. None of the tenders for the"purchase <>* the N.Z.S. Co.*a steamers are considered eligible for acceptance. The directors are still open to receive amended tenders. August, 26fh. Mr. ■Rich.-tf-dann intimated to the House this afternoon that in order to enable members to go South the Tararua would be detained until Saturday, and that the -Luna and Taranaki would sale North the same day. August 26th. A presentation of a valuable'locket and necklace was made to Miss Alice May at the concert last night. The Opera Company proceed to Napier to day. The Agent of the A.5.% Co. has received a telegram from Sydney to the effect that the City of Melbourne, which leaves there for San Francisco, on the 29th inst., will probably call at Auckland, and leave here on the 4th September. The Luna has sailed from Wellington, bound South, August 27th. The San Francisco mail will arrived here this evening, and be sent South by the the Phoebe to-morrow at 1 p.m. Alexandra, August 25th. Twenty-five head of cattle and three horses have been taken from the vicinity of Wakau. 3%e animals, which were the property of settlers, have been taken by the Ngatimaniapoto Natives, and are now in the possession of ltewi at Kuite, \eho refuses to give them up. The cattle were taken for trespass, and the negotiations for their return have as yet been without success. Greymotjth, August 25th. The deputation appointed by the Borough Council and the Coal Company ■will proceed to Wellington to-night to virge upon the General Government the necessity for the construction of the Greymouth Harbour Works as recommended by Mr. Moriarty. p Moeraki, August 25th. ' The sea here to-day was heavier than has been seen for years. There are five cargoes of iron in the bay, and work has been suspended. Christchurch, August 26th. An additional section of the Great Southern Railway, 18 miles in length, from Kakaia to Ashburton, was opened for general traffic to-day. The total length now open from Christchurch is 50- miles. At a meeting of the Acclimatisation Society held yesterday afternoon the curator announced that over 10,000 ova had been obtained from the trout in the gardens. A large number of trout, varying from 18 to 30 inches in length, have "been lately seen in the river Avon. August 27th. Quotations, f.o.b. : — Wheat. 5s 3d ; t>ats. 4s 9d to 5s : barley, 5s 6d to 6s ; flour, £12 103 to £13 ; bran, £6 ; sharps, £7 ; cheese, 7£d to T\d ; butter, Is to Is 3d ; potatoes, £6. The stock of wheat is getting low, and farmers are asking 5s in Christchurch. Oats and potatoes are scarce, and the local demand is good. Atjcklakd, August 27th. Mr. Saunders reports : — Sales : Caledonian, £o ss. Buyers : South British, £2 12s; Aibion, £3; Black. 10s 6d ; Otago, Us 6d. Sellers : National Bank, £3 3s ; Whau, £2 19s ; Bright Smile, £4 2s. .Invercargill. August 27th. To-day was observed as a public holiday on the occasion of,, the laying of the foundation- stone of the new Athenaeum building. The ceremony was performed by the local Lodge of Freemasons . There was a large assemblage, and the proceedings passed off very satisfactorily.
