(From our ovm Correspondent. DtJira»i*r, July 3rd. Several members of the Legislative Council and House Representatives left for the North in the City of Adelaide this afternoon. The San Francisco and Suez mails Were delivered this afternoon. Applications under the nominated system for 270 souls were forwarded to Britain by the mail to-day. The New Zealand Parliament was opened at 2 o'clock to-day by his Excellency, who delivered the opening address, in which the various matters affecting the colony generally are referred to, as also the marriage of the Duke of Edinburgh aa affording an opportunity for expressing congratulations to the Queen. July 4, A fire broke out on the premises of A. It. Hay, draper, shortly after 12 o'clock last night. The Fire Brigade was on the spot with the utmost promtitude, bnt the whole of the inside of the building and stock were destroyed. The Insurance on the same amounts to about to £4500, Hogg and Hutton, in the adjoining premises, also suffered slight damage, but it is covered by a policy for £10QQ in the Norwich Union. Hay's insurance is in the following offices : Australian Alliance, £1000; Victoria, £1000; South British (on building) £1000 ; Liverpool and London (on building), £1000 ; London and Lanchasire (on building), £500. Had it not been for the water supply, and the energy and promtitude of the Brigade, a great conflagration would have resulted. The arguments on demurrer in the case Kitching v. McCarthy were concluded in the Supreme Court yesterday, His Honor intimated that he would take time to consider his decision. It is rumoured that the "Daily Times" has been served with a writ at the instance of Judge Ward for publishing telegrams which plaintiff alleges were forgeries. Damages laid at £2000.
