ALEXANDRA MAYORAL ELECTION.
(To the Editor.) Sir, — In a few days the ratepayers in the various municipalities will be called on to elect one of their number to fill the office of Mayor for the ensuing year. Tho fact that the honor of filling the civic chair at Alexandra is to be contested must be my opology for troubling you on this occasion. No doubt some of your readers will remember a letter which appeared in your columns about ten months since, signed "a ratepayer," also another letter some fortnight later. The first letter pointed out that one of the councillors elected was not eligible to fill the office to which he was elected — he, at the time of election not having paid his rates, then due. The second letter reflected rather sharply on the town clerk, and if 1 rightly recollect both those letters remain unanswered to this day, and the gentleman still retaines his seat at the Council board, and is now a candidate for the civic chair. As reports are abroad not very complimentary either to Mr. Candidate or Mr. Town Clerk respecting the nonpayment of those rates, the ice is now broken, and either or both have an opportunity of giving their version of the affair, j} I may state that it is a matter of indifference to me who is elected to the honourable post of Mayor of Alexandra, but there is one thing certain that one of the candidates can with confidence say that if talent is the only requiremrnt needed, that he must be the right man in the right place for he has been able to hold his seat at the Council board for the last twelve months without any qualification so to do — that is' if I read the ordinance correctly.— l am, &c, Ratepayer. Alexandra. Jnne 6, 1874,
