{From our own Correspondent. Dune din, June 26. The Immigrants in the barracks who struck work the other day finding that the Government intended stopping their rations, resumed work to-day. The Claud Hamilton arrived this morning from Melbourne. At an influential meeting to-day, a provisional committee was appointed to collect subscriptions and draw up rules in order to at once make a start with the Sailors' Home. Nickle and Campbell are the successful tenderers for the erection of new railway passenger station Dunedin, contract price £3368 10s. Dunedin, June 27, 9.26 a.m. Resolutions ratifying the scale of the water works to the Corporation were unanimously agreed to at a meeting df shareholders yesterday. Yesterday was observed as a cloae holiday at Riverton in commemoration ofj the turning of the first sod of the Riverton railway by his Honor the Superintendent. Mr. Macandrew filled a wheelbarrow with earth and deposited it in the appointed place amidst tremendous applause. At a banquet in the evening about 70 persons sat down to a sumptuous repast.

In the Provincial Council, Mr. Andrewmoved : " That the time had arrived, when cremation, or the burning of human bodies, should take place in order to prevent the pollution of the ground, streams, and the air, which resulted from burying such bodies ; and that a sum be placed on the Estimates for the purpose of establishing the most approved system of cremation." Sir Cracroffc Wilson seconded the motion. A short discussion took place, during which no positive objection was made ; but the general opinion was that the time had not arrived when it was neoessai*y to bring it into operation. The motion was withdrawn.
