WASTE LAND BOARD.

The usual weekly meeting of the Board was held on the 11 th. Present— The Chief Commissioner, Messrs Butterworth, Clarke, Strode, Reid, and Bastings.

Mr Ezra Eldred represented that if the Timber Regulations are adhered to he will be compelled to abandon his limekiln at Bob's Cove, Lake Wakatip. The Chief Commissioner read an abstruse calculation which he had gone into on the subject, by which it appeared' that if applicant were compelled to take out a license to cut timber the increase in expense of making his lime would be only one;third of a farthing per busheL Regulations to be adhered to. Tenders for the conduct of auction sales in the districts round Clyde, and .Naseby were opened, and, after discussion, referred to the Government. The tender of Mr G. Fache, for the former district, waa at 2 per cent, all round, while tenders from two other: auctioneers for the districts round Naseby were very much higher. Mr Andrew Haldane applied for a lease of a strip of country along the coast west of Waikawa. The Chief Commissioner stated that applicant waa the pioneer of the district, and the request was granted, nnder clause 161 of the >Waste> Land Act, at LI per annum. Mr James North, Portobello, wrote relative to the formation of a road" between blocks 1 and ,2, Portobello, and the Native Reserve. The letter was acknowledged as received and read, Messrs X)onnell and Moodie, for' Messrs G-uthrie sad Larnach, applied, for a lease of 160 acres of bush land situate in block 1, Woodlands. Granted until Dec. 31, 1876. Mr'Oonnell submitted that it would be to the advantage of the Province if larger leases than three yean' terms were granted, as with tiie short leases every stick of timber would be cut; while if say a ten years' lease were grantee^ only that timber would be cut which was actually fit, and the younger growth weuld be cultivated. The Bdard thought a loss of revenue would be incurred, as even if the timber were all cut, the- land, would be stilt available and the Chief Commissioner remarked that at -the rate at which the timber land waa being cut and cleared, there was still a supply for the next two hundred year* --. t .•■.-,; : .. j -Mr Xß.Bradshaw, for.
