(From the Dunedin Dailies. ) Wellington June 9th. With the exception of a few families, all the immigrants recently arrived have obtained employment. The Post says, it is asserted on good authority that next session will not exceed six or eight w^eks. ♦ June 10th. The rate of interest allowed on deposits in the Post Office Savings Bank will be increased on the Ist July from 4 to 4£ per cent, on deposits of £200 ; and from Bto4 on £500 deposits. At auction to-day, 375 Romney Marsh sheep were sold at 6s 9d per head, including lambs. Auckland, June 9th. Mr. Mackay, the General Government agent at Waikato, threatens an action for libel against the Thames Advertiser for stating that he made purchases on the Upper Thames on his own account. The natives are petitioning the Govern -1 ment to stop further purchase till the native title is individualised. Fears are entertained for the safety of the cutter Agnes which left the Manukau for Waikato heads eleven days ago. She has been missing since with a crew of three men. The s s. Hero, Captain Logan, arrived here from .Sydney, at seven o'clock. June 10th. The Provincial Council carried 5y a large majority the motion confirming the desirability of the General Government retaining the control of the Police. The citizons' ball to the Governor was attended by over 400 persons. Geahamstown, June 10th. The "Thames Advertiser" has been gublishing a series of disclosures about land jobbing. It has charged Mr. Mackay with buying a large block of couutry for his own private benefit, when acting as agent for the Government for purchasing land. Mr. Mackay has commenced proceedings for libel. Tho "Advertiser" declined to retract, but repeats the charges, and says it is prepared to prove them, and also that the land is registered in Mr. Mackay's name. Taubanga, June 10th. Thirty distinct earthquakes were felt at Rotorua yesterday. Chbistchueoii, June 10th. In the Provincial Council last night, the Treasurer made his Financial Statement. The balance in hand, to September 30th, 1872, was £424,225 ; receipts since tfiafc date to May 31st, £542,152 ; total, £906.377. Expenditure during the same period, £31(5,390, leaving a credit balance 0:1,. May 31st of £649,986. The estimated receipts for the nino months ending March 31st, 1875, wore £212,579, making, with the balance in hand, a total revonue of £1,170,308. The estimated expenditure for the same ■ peried is £1,113,412. The proposed expenditure on buildings, including £i 6,976 for districts schools, £10,000 for normal schools, and £14,540 for public buildings, is £123,001 The proposed expenditure on bridges is £108,081 ; ditto on roads, £51,874. The proposed miscellaneous expenditure, including £6100 for irrigation of plains and water supply, is — Lyttelton, £5000 for planting, and £8196 for public libraries ; for country districts, £88,153. The proposed expenditure on railways is £196,002. The proposed expenditure on grants in aid is £5155. The Council has recommended the Superintendent to place a sum on the Estimates for continuing the geological survey of the Province. Melbourne, June 2nd. O'Farrell, the Victorian defaulter, escaped from Fiji (? New Caledonia) in a small veasel for Tanna ; from thence he hopes to escape to South America. The markets are dull. Brandies are advancing ; sales of Hennessy's are quoted, pale, 11s 6d ; MarteU's dark, 10s 6d to 10a 9d. New Zealand wheat, 5s 6d to 5s 9d. Sydney June 2nd. The R.M.S-S. Tartar, with the Calif ornian sails punctually on Saturday, full of passengers. The Government is likely to be defeated on the motion disapproving of Gardiner's (the bushranger) release. Meetings in the country districts continue to be held to protest against the Governor's proposed clemency to bushrangers. H.M.S Challenger sails on Thursday. She will complete shore soundings for the cable on Wednesday. H.M.S. Conflict sails the same day for Fiji.
