Wholesale quotations for flour are : £13 to £14 for beßt brands. No wheat. Oats are essier, at 4s 3d to 4s 9d at auction ; ex store at ss. Maize, 6s 6d to 7s retail. Parcels of stock are low. Potatoes £4- 10s to £5. Hams, 9d. Bacon, 6d to 7d. Butter, Is to Is Id, best dairies. Cheese, 6d to 7d. Best salt butter, Is to Is Id. May 30. In the General Synod, yesterday, a Bill was introduced by Mr. Acland, and read a second time, for defining the mode of procedure in altering or repealing new fundamental provisions of the constitution. It was resolved, on the motion of the Dean of Christchurch, " That the Synod deplores the wide prevalence of intemperance among professing Church members of all classes. That the evil is so great as to call for special agencies for its abatement, but that the mode of doing so is best left in the hands of the Diocesan Sjnods, and the Synod earnestly request their attention to the matter." A select committee is to be appointed to prepare a form, according to which all the statistical returns of the several dioceses shall be made up. June 1. The first number of the " New Zealand Times," with which is incorporated the " Wellington Independent," appeared this morning in new type. Wangantti, May 29. There are nine entries for the Grand Colonial Steeplechase ; six for the Maiden Plate. The meeting is expected to be a great success this year. A Nelson horse is the favourite for the big event. May 30. The Grand Colo7iial Steeplechase was won by Butcher Boy, a Nelson horse, Supplejack being second, and Isleman third ; the rest nowhere. The Maiden Pfate by the Arrow, with Euchre second, and Yorkshireman third. Tho meeting was well attended, aud the racing good. Nelson, May 29. The Executive Council Act for the Province, for responsible government, has received the Superintendent's assent. Mr. Greenfield, the late Provincial Secretary, was sent for, but declined the formation of a new Executive, and on his recommendation the Superintendent sent for Mr. O'Connor, who takes till Monday to consider. Napier, May 29. In re the four men belonging to the Shiehallion, brought up for disorderly conduct, the case against one was dismissed, and the rest got a month each. *CnßiSTCnuncH, May 29. The forty-first session of the Provincial Council was opened to-day. May 30. Arrived : Rouparello, ship, from London, with 366 immigrants, after a voyage of 90 days from land to land. There were three deaths and three births on the voyage. The passengers are in excellent health. June 1. A heavy gale yesterday swamped numbers i of small cr^ft and injured others, but there was no serious casualty. The ttar of the South news contains "particulars of the murder of Boss Lewin, a planter at Tanna. He was shot by natives in revenge for shooting a pig in his garden. He requested that his body might be buried in the sea lest the natives should dig it up. His wife went out with a boat to comply with his wishes, when she was driven away by a gale, and after enduring great privation she was picked up •by the schooner Donald M'Lean, on a labour cruise. Bloodshed had occured on the vessel previously, the mate having been killed with an axe by a native, and a sailor shot through the mouth with a poisoned arrow. Two others were wounded. Reefton, June 1. The Wealth of Nations 26 days' crushing yielded 4600zs melted gold. A dividend of 2$ per share has been declared. Timaru, June 1. A fire broke out at 12.30 a.m., and burnt two wooden houses — Cassidy, baker, insured in the Northern ; Paget the tailor for £300 in the Standard, and £350 in ihe London and Liverpool. New Plymouth, May 30. Major Atkinson, in the Provincial Council, road a telegram from the Premier, stating that the Government was determined to limit the number of immigrants during the next seven munths to 25,000. The land regulations have passed. Qfeknstown, May 30. The Government policy is generally endorsed here. The land system is ranch approved, but increased arears for individual settlement are required where blocks of mixed quality occur. The Shotover River is favourable for working, and good results are being obtained. Wheat remains unsaleable at 2s 6d. per bushel. Incendiarism has ceased, owing no doubt to the vigorous measures taken against it. AUSTRALIAN NEWS. Melbourne May 23rd. have arrived. They have been about the coast for several days. A thousand members of the fire brigades take part in the demonstration on Monday. The principal feature in the markets has been the sale and re-sale of brandies, of which commodity some large parcels have been sold. At auction sales, parcels have been withdrawn at prices below holders' views. Breadstuffs remain unchanged. Large sales of kerosene oil have been effected at low rates. The market for sugars remains dull and unchanged. Sydney, May 23rd. The Mikado arrived from San Francisco on the 11th inst. The Home Government present a gold watch to Captain Jefferson, of the Velocidade, a New Zealand trader, for rescuing the crew of the Belleisle off Newcastle. Hawthorne and Glover were executed at Goulburn. The latter confessed to four other murders. Adelaide May 23rd. A sixth Minister will be created, with the title of Minister for the Northern Territory. A boat accident happened at Ironbridge Island. Six lives were lost by the capsizing of a boat in a squall. The Treasurer's Financial Statement is very satisfactory.', The Revenue is £7000 more than lajaVyear. He expects to bring forward a credit balance of £84,000 next year. Bulkeley's Leolines second, and Mr. Barclay's Bertram third. • • The Chi'ean Government imprisoned the captain of an English coasting steamer which capsized with a number of Chilean passengers. Mr. ltuinbold, British Minister at Valparaiso, demanded the release of the captain, and an indemnity for the outrage. London, May 15th. The instructions given to the Fiji Special Commissioners by Earl Kimberly, dated August 1873, have been presentey to Parliament. Amongst other matters they state that if a tolerable indigenous Government were possible, it would be more advantageous to Britian and the Fijis than the assumption by England of the heavy responsibilities of government. May 16th. The Emperor of Russia in reply to the congratulations of the Diplomatic Corps, said the policy of Russia was the preservation of peace, and he hoped the principal Governments would be found united in the same object. During the present wool season a series of 100,000 bales were sold. Competition continues extremely vigorous, and prices well sustained. May 18th. A magnificent banquet was given to the Emperor of Kussia by the Lord M-ayor and Corporation in the Guildhall. The Grand Duke Alexis, the Priuce and Princess of Wales, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, aud other members of the Royal Family were present. The Emperor, in replying to an address expressed his thanks for the cordial reception accorded to himself and his daughter. He hoped these marks of affection from the fcfuglish people would draw still clo3or the bonds of friendship between Russia aud England, and would be for their mutual prosperity. New York, May 19th. The Chilean authorities have released Captain Hyde, imprisoned for his vessel capsizing with Chilean passengers on board, The question of indemnity is pending. Money easy.
