SKENE'S LABOR EXCHANGE. May 27th. We have- at last got quantity in the shape of emigrants, but as to quality I am sorry to report that it is' very meagre. First the Asia, of which the least said the better ; then the James Nicol Fleming with about 300 souls, healthy enough certainly, but wanting starana ; and now the Janet Court crossing the Bar with another lot from Glasgow. They should he more of the right stamp. People who have been coming of late are much more difficult to please than the good old stamp we used to get ; in fact, they are pampered too much, and,- get ' out too cheaply. Tradesmen are more valued than they were at home, so are ploughmen and farm servants of all kinds, and neither can be well spared, so that the sooner we tiust to our own resources the better. The railway worts will soon take up a much greater, number of men than hitherto, and by the time the present, contracts are completed, as many more will be started, so that the working man may safely count on Bs. per day for many a day to come. Wages run about the same from week to week. Good servant girls get from £35 lo £45, and much higher if good cooks or barmaids ,- farm hands get £55 to £.65 { if married, wife to cook, £75 to £90 and found ; shepherds get £60 and £65 ; masons, carpenters, and bricklayers average say 14s, per day ; tailors and shoemakers are busy at piece work ; youngsters, boys and girls, get 65., 75., and up to 10s. per week.
