OURSELVES AS OTHERS SEE US.

■' ' - (To the Editor.) Diab Me. Editob,— Your kiadneßS in -prirititt' my last letter gives me courage fto write again to you. I know everybody ' ought to mind their own business, and what .1 am going to say doe* not concern me personally ; but I wm just thinkin', maybe what Jolts see everyday they don't notice till suddenly, their eyes are opened, and they wonder 'why they were blind so long. There is no use •huttin* the stable door when the steed has gone ; and- so I. make it my business to send yon a few observations to relieve my mind somewhat. I was on a visit to your township lately, and bein' in a thinkin' mood (havin* just been readin' in your paper about the (terrible epidemic that has visited Cromwell »nd carried away so many precious lives) my f thoughts ran thus : Well, here are churches many — no fewer than three' in one street and two in another—and comely Looking buildings they are; so far so good, if they are well attended by earnest well-meanin'- folks, who listen to ministers who practice what they preach. Then, again, there's the new Town lall ; a large building it will be when finished; it will be quite an ornament to the town. Evidently the Lawrence folks are studyin' ih« want* of the third and fourth generations. Very pi-airworthy indeed, for I can see there's « numerous risin' generation ; the streets are verily swarmin' with boys and girls. They speak of building a new school, larger than 'the present one ; that's a good sign, and a .laudable thing to spend: money for. That other erection there, is to be the new Courthouse, and the old one is to be converted into 'a post office. It's a sensible thing to have a food big post office. The present one is a Ugroce to the place ; but I don't see why i jChey couldn't just exchange, for it seems to ! ifeie, from readin' your paper, there's too much •kw and draggin' one another into court among !the folks. Irs a pity they won't try, and pull iaore one way, and deal justly to each other j havin' to be forced to do so, which £ould be more consistent with their churchoing character. However, they know best, ih! I don't like to see that a new gaol is J«ng built. That's a kind of building that should be made less instead of bigger. It's a try bad sign when they want more accomMdation there. It rather damps my spirits p see this. However, the place is increasing lod there will be rogues ana thieves in every ■lace, and they must be shut away from tolcstin' respectable folks ; so better build a nose big enough and strong enough to hold torn than let them run at large. Now then, I aought, you Town Councillors and people of Awrence, you're doin' well in the way of Bkrgin' the town and beantifyin* it ; but is at useful getting as much attention as the mmental t What about the cleanliness of t?* What about the drains P Don't you dieve in plenty -water to wash away all lth and keep the place and the people sweet nd clean ? There s a fine, wide street — Boss Sace they call it. It would not 'disgrace ren a fine city in the old country. Ay, but n the old country in such a street there would • » scavenger to see to its being kept clean, nd a Nuisance Inspector would go his rounds ccasionally to see that there was no nuisance rtdeh would -make it unhealthy for the inlabltants. Well, Til just suppose there's inch an Inspector along with me now. At very-tarn I meet with some offensive smell' oming from backyards, and even from open ratings in the gutters. -How can it be itherwise, seem' there is no outlet for snch ent up nuisances as slops, pigstyes, closets, idly kept stables, &&* 1 was just thinkia', Mnnie'nd me to ray country house, where the rtah air comes from all quarters, it's well »■ Lawrence that the winter weather is aproachin', for if there's no fever, they have Dt themselves to thank lot taking steps to wrrent it. Now, Mn Editor, these are my nervations. I shall conclude by wishin' the •wrene* folks continued good health to Bjoy all their wealth and grandeur. Again (subscribe myself in modest contentment L Bicxx Stbvthzbs.
