LICENSING COURT, LAWRENCE.
Tuesday, 19th May. (E. H. Carew, Esq., R.M., Chairman; A. Stewart, Esq., J.P., W. E. Farrer, Esq., and M. Fraer, Esq. Ellen M'Swiney's application for a bottle license was granted. Mr. M'Coy for applicant. Mark Higgin's application for a wholesale license was refused, on the ground that Mr. Higgins held a bottle license, and it was out of the power of the Bench to grant him another license while he held the first. Mr. M'Coy for applicant. Johannes Kofoed applied for a brewer's license. This application had been adjourned to give the Court time to consider several legal points that arose under the Distillation Act, 1866, and the Licensing Ordinances and Acts. These were reviewed by the Chairmau and the license was granted. The Chairman intimated before the rising af the Court, that it should not be supposed that applications for new licenses would be granted as a matter of course. They woul I consider whether a house was required, in the locality, and generally it would be unlikely when very old houses passed out of the hands of the licensee that they would be re-licensed.
