Noes, 24. — Allen, Daniel, Davie, Haggitfc, Henderson, Kinross, Lumsden, Menzies, Mollison, M'Kellar, M'Lean, M'Neil, Reid (Teller), Reynolds, Roberts, Rodgers, Shand, Stout (Teller), Teschemaker, Tolmie, Turnbullj Webster, Wilson, Wood. Hay 15, 7.40 p.m. Judge Chapman proceeds to Wellington to morrow to attend the (Jourt of Appeal. Work at the wreck of the Surat has been discontinued for tha winter. A well-known criminal named John Morrison was arrested at the Mataura yesterday evening. He is charged with several forgeries in Dunedin and the Province. The hearing of the charge against J S. M'Farlane was continued at the R,M.*s Court, Auckland, to-day. The case was dismissed. Two 6ther charges against M'Farlane will be heard on Monday. May 16th, 9.16 a.m. . Mr. Fish, in the Provincial Council, has tabled a motion for Monday to the effect that ; a Select Committee be appointed to inquire into the present financial condition of the province and all matters connected with the Treasury Department. Mr. Reid looks upon this motion as tantamont to another vote of want of confidence in the Executive, • In reply to a question asked by, Mr .Ireland, Mr. Reid said the Government did not intend to take any action with regard to the Education Ordinance, He had lively recollections of the last occasion when he proposed to deal with that matter. A resolution approving of the recommendation of his Honor the Superintendent that the police paddock, Tokomairiro, is a suitable site for a Lunatic Asylum and farm was agreed to, and it was deoided that steps be taken to give effect thereto. | The Council adjourned until 2 o'clock on Monday. The dinner to Mr. A. J. Bums last night was a very successful affair.
