London, May 5. A strike of 25,000 colliers has occurred in Durham against a reduction of wages. ' : May 6. A cablegram from Bombay, May 4th,- says that serious rioting was taking place in the French Settlement at Shanghai,, where stones were thrown, and the houses burnt and sacked ; but the English Settlement was not molested, Several rioters were shot. A number of sailors landed, and volunteers were called out to quell the disturbance ; and all is quiet now. The riot was caused in consequence of interference with some Ningpo graves , by the French when- constructing a road. a
Resist the temptation of circulating ill reports. If you cannot speak well of another say nothing. Why should you consider his character less than your own ? Speak of others as you would were they present ; speak as a friend of him who is absent and cannot speak for himself.
It is rather hard to have nice facts disturbed by subsequent explanations. A few days ago 'a man's -life was saved by the ball from a pistol accidentally discharged entoring a 'Bible, .which he, carried in. his pocket. Everybody .said, ".See how the religious are rewarded !" until it was discovered that this devotee had stolen the sacred volume, and was on his Way to pawn it for liquor, . - '
