(From the Dunedin Dailies. ) Wellington, May 9th. There is a competition amongst the bakers of the city. The 41b loaf is advertised for s£d. The Bishops of Auckland and Nelson, and other members of the Church of England, arrived to-day to attend the Synod. An extract from a letter by Dr Kirchner, the Queensland representative at the Vienna Exhibition, to the Agent-General, is published here. It states that " New Zealand wheat commanded much attention. Numbers of agriculturists were eager to procure samples so that Mr. Bevan had to put a price on, and sold it at sixpence per small wine glass full. By some very intelligent farmers and millers our wheat was preferred to that from South Australia, they considered it would yield more flour and less bran, &c. Flax also caused much attention, and some was distributed among the manufacturers and spinners who were desirous to make a trial of its adaptability. New Zealand tweed was considered superior to Victorian. Samples of South Australian, Californian, and New Zealand wheat were tried bya Mecklenburg farmer, but the May frosts destroyed all but the New Zealand crops." May 11th The question of the legality of mail coaches paying tolls h«ving been decided once in this Province in favour of the mail by Mr. Young, the coach contractor, who gained a former case at Wangamii. The tender of Messrs, Brogden for the Kafcanui and Island Creek Bridges, Otago, for £6636, has been accepted. Auckland, May 9th. The charge against Macfarlane occupied the greater part of the day, and was adjourned till Monday for the evidence of Mr. Eeddell, B.M. at Coromeradel. Daring fixts hearing of the case, several scenes occurred' between the parties engaged, particularly when Thomas Craig was being examined. , Andrew Craig deposed that Macfarlane told him to take armed men to Wangapoua and seize the logs, and if any resistance, to make sure of shooting young Harris. He replied he did not care about shooting, but would fight for the logs. Macfarlane replied : Take your father down, he will do it. Shooting young Harris would settle all lawsuits. He said this seriously on three occasions. Witness went to seize the logs but took no firearms. A few days after returning to town, Macfarlane said, '• You were a fool for not shooting Harris when he drew his revolver." Craig was cross-examined at great length, with a view to show animus against Macfarlane. Obetmotjth, May 9th.
