The Cyphrenes arrived at 7.15 this morning with the English mails, and about two hours afterwards again left with the outward mails.
The number of applications forwarded by the Immigration Officer under the nominated system was 243.
The case of Macassey v. Bell bids fair to occupy a portion of next week. Mr^Macassey has been under examination all day. Several stacks on Preston's station, ETye-
burn, were destroyed by fire last night by supposed incendiarists. A Wellington telegram states that Mr. Lemon, General Manager of the Telegraph Department, -is perfecting a system of his ■ Own for sending' two messages -simultaneously •by one wire. ; " , ' ' May 9th, 9.20 a.m. 1 The business in the, Provincial Council yesterdaywasonlyof a trifling nature. Beyond disposing of a few notices of motion, nothing was done, and the Council adjourned after sitting an hour and a half. Auckland, May Bth. The ketch Janny Kelly has been wrecked on the East Coast. She is insured in the National for £700. The charge against J. S. M'Farlane, Auck. land merchant, is being continued in the Police Court. Evidence was given by Thos. Craig that the defendant had seriously, and on more than one occason, instructed him to .shoot young Harris if the latter obstructed the taking possession of some logs over which there was some dispute.
