TUAPEKA BOARD OF WARDENS.

A meeting of the Tuapeka Board of Wardens was held in the Victoria Hotel, Lawrence, on Saturday, the 18th inst. Present — the Chairman (Mr. M'Nickle), and Messrs. J. MCombe, J. MHattie, and M. Whelan.

The previous minutes were read and confirmed. A letter from the Waipori Board of Wardens was read, concurring in the suggestion made by the Tuapeka Board as to the advisability of appointing a ranger to take charge of the three depasturing districts. The letter _also stated that " the supervision of the present Inspector is very unsatisfactory for this district — in fact, practically we are without a ranger altogether, cattle owners returning whatever number of cattle they please, and suiting their own convenience as to when or whether they pay for them when returned." A letter from Mr. Pierce Power was received, stating, in reply to this Board complaining of pigs straying on the commonage, that he (Mr. Power) had nothing to do with the animals complained of, and that it was a matter for the Board of Wardens to attend to. The Chairman here stated that Mr. Carew, the Goldfields Warden, had called upon him in reference to the application of Messrs. M'Donald and Matheson to fence in part of the commonage. He .had informed the Chairman that he was in receipt of a letter, from a member of the Government instructing him to arrange the matter if possible. Ths Chairman informed Mr. C&rew that he would bring the matter again before the Board of Wardens, and communicate to him the result. The Chairman here explained to the meeting hia views upon the matter, which were quite approved of by the other members of theßoard, denouncing in plain terms the grasping tendency of Messrs. M'Donald and Matheson'B applications, they having already a monopoly of the. greater ..part of the dis-

trict for sheep grazing, and appearing desirous to secure the remainder by every possible means. He also stated that several cattle owners at the Spur were disposing of their stock at a great sacrifice, iv consequence of not being able to keep them alive on tho limited area of country, which, although set apart for the oxclusivo grazing of cattle, is still overrun with sheep, and consequently useless for cattle grazing. Mr. M'Hattie proposed " That the Chairman should wait upon the Goldfields Warden and intimate to him their determination to adhere to their former resolution to decline Messrs. M'Donald and Matheson's application." Mr. M'Combe, in seconding the resolution, stated that Mr. Matheson had sent in an application to run 1,550 sheep on the commonage, and that, whether granted or not, he would run them there. The resolution was carried. The Chairman was also deputed to see the Goldfields Warden, and ascertain if Mr. Power was the proper person to perform the duties of Inspector or Ranger on the Tuapeka, Waipori, and Waitahuna districts ; and, if so, that Mr. Power be requested by the Board to have all sheep removed from tho Tuapeka commonage.
