SKENE'S LABOR EXCHANGE. Dt/nedik, March 24. It is really too bad — indeed out of place, to talk of labor oHabor reports in the midst of these days of races, Bports, good feeling, and jollification of all sorts! Dunedin for the last few days has put on her holiday attire, and bid bard work and dull care goodbye for a time. It is a very good sign of a people when all classes can afford to turn out so respectably as the Otago settlers and their friends from al> parts did on the three first days of the week. Although racing matters are not my theme, yet I may just say that all the business of the 'races was carried through in most honorable style. Country friends who came to town embraced the opportunity of filling up any gaps in their staff of servants. Late arrivals are quietly but steadily moved off, and forming new homes for themselves. The demand is steady for all sorts, and wages are firm. The following figures are about the correct thing : — Carpenters, masous, bricklayers, 13s. and 14s. per day. Farm hands run from £52 to £55 and £60 ; if married, partner to help, £60 and £70, and as high as £90. Shepherds run about £60 ; day laborers, Bs. and upwards. Females still rule the market, and there is work for all.
