J The Mayor detailed an interview he had with the Goldfields Secretary re the erection of a bridge across the creek in connection with the retaining wall, and which inverview was unfavorable to the demand. Ferguson said that he observed the Oamaru C6rporation in their accounts for the year had a sum of £20 as receipts for poundage fees and enquired if auch fees could not be obtained by the Lawrence Coporation. After some conversation Cr. Hay moved, and Cr.' Ferguson seconded* "That the Legislative Committee obtain 'information as to. the matter of poundage fees. Cr. Forguson said there was a matter in which he thought the Council should take some steps. He referred to the blocks of land on Bellamy and Smith's runs which..it was some time since proposed by the Government to soil. He considered that if the (government were atill of the. same mind and carried out their intentions' it would strike a severe blo^r ! to the- future prosperity of Tuapeka, as he had no hesitation in saying that either Mr. Smith or some other gentleman would buy up the whole of, this lafld in auestiou. He thought some .action taken by the Council was very desirable, and it would be very seemly on the part of the Mayor- to take the initiative. Cr. Walker- considered it 8j most urgent duty on the part of the Council ta take some steps in this matter, and prevent , the land being sold iv large blocks. He knew of a considerable quantity of very fair agricultural land .in tho locality spoken of, and the Town .Council of Lawrence would not be doing its duty if it did not take some decided action in tlie matter. • He believed the Government -wQuldJbajaurauine a vorx-injurious course for the prosperity of the district, if they Bold the land in question in the- manner proposed. Ho would move, " That the following "committee be appointed to wait upon Mr. Holloway when he visited' Laurence, viz., the Mayor, Grs. Hayes, Ferguson, and the mover." Cr. Arthur seconded the motion^wbich was -carried. „ , • The Mayor drew the attention of tlie Council to the unsatisfactory stale of the management, Of, the cemetery. There were only two of the trustees acting. He advised tho Council to endeavor, a_t _tbp. next sitting of the Provincial Council, to have something done. Cr, Fergusou moved, " That" a letter be written to the members of the Provincial CoViicil rcpr'eaenting'the district, asking 'them to bring in an Ordinance ab next session of theProvmcial Coanjl'by which tha bouudary of the town may^Pjo extended as to include within it the Lawren'-e ceraietery."
