The Carnatic's immigrants, about 200 in number, are expected to be released from quarantine to-day. The Inspector of Police at Invercargill seized five tins of opium, valued at £77 ; smuggled into the province by a Chinaman named Ah Hop., who has been fined £100 or six months imprisonment. Owing to the great scarcity of houses in Invercargill. the Provincial Government are advertising for tenders for the erection of ten double cottages for immigration purposes. Mr. M'lntosh, of the firm of Grave and M'lntosh, charged with forging instrument of lease, was yesterday after two days trial committed at Oamaru. Bail accepted for £500. At a large meeting of masons held at Christchurch on Thursday night, it was resolved to offer a scholarship for competition by sons of members of the Order under twelve years of age. Patea land sale on the 12th instant was a great success ; best rural sections brought £5 to £6 15s. per acre. The Anazi case is being continued at Auckland. Several witnesses swear that Captain Holman was drunk the night of the accident.
