LAWRENCE TOWN" COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the Council was held on Monday evening. Present: Crs. Walker, Armstrong, Hayes, and Hay. In the absence of the Mayor, Cr. Walkar was called to the chair. The minutes of the last regular meeting, and that of three special meetings of the Council were read- and approved of. An application made by the contractors of the Town Hall, for permission to erect an enclosure, including the footpath and part of the street, was granted. The question of the drainage of the sections on the east side of Peel-street was considered bp the Council. After considerable discussion by the Council, Cr. Hay moved, " That owners of property on the east side of Peel-street be allowed to construct a drain, to the satisfaction oi. the Public Works Committee, through the Corporation section in Ros3 Place, for the purpose of draining their ground." Cr. Hayes seconded. Carried. The following letter, from tho contractors of the Town Hall, was ordered lo lie on the table :— "To the Lawrence Town CounHl. " Gentlemen, — Having ascertained that the Corporation lamps are not being used, and aa it i 3 necessary to keep light 3 during the erec- - tion of the Town Hall, we respectfully request to be allowed fclxe ixs& o£ tKein ctttrixisr t>lie progi'ess of the works, — We remain, yours respectfully, Mbaes & Whittet." A letter from Messrs. Eurt, was referred td the Public Works Committee to report ou same. The following accounts were referred to Public Works and Finance Committees: — W. Mears, £5 2s. 6d ; J. Dowjiie, £46 ; F. H. M'Coy, £2 25. ; T. Buckley, £8 ; A. &; T. Burt, £2: 75. 6d. ; J. H. Prcssly. &. The Chairman drew the attention of tha. Council to the gravelling of the streets. Hd especially directed attention to the late contract of Messrs. Downie and Detert, which, he recommended, should be gravelled before the winter came on. Cr. Armstrong gave notice of motion for next Council meeting to the following effect : "That that portion of the Beaumont road known as Downie and Detert's contract ba gravelled with screened gravel 6ft. wide and 6in. deep." It was resolved that tho footpath leading from Whitehaven-street to the English Church parsonage be gravelled; that the Public Works Committee be also authorised to gravel the road from the Hospital gate to Mr. Peter Robertson's residence ; that a sum not exceeding £5 be expended on a bad piece of road leading- io the Presbyterian manse; and that a sum' of £3 be expended on Sandystreet. A conversation then took place with regard to the surfaceman employed, and the necessity for having the street gutters, &c., seen i,o. The Town Clerk was instructed to write to the Inspector of Nuisances respecting a nuisance- in the Beaumont road, at the back of the Commercial stables. It seems that tho building known as Mr. Lyng'sis partly built upon the Corporation, section on which the Town Hall is about to be erected, and Cr. Hayes, as agent for the owner of the building, wished to know if the Council would be agreeable to lease three feet o£ the Corporation section. He said the contractor had informed him that that number of feet could be allowed without interfering with the Town Hall. After considerable discussion, the CouS*iJ- . adopted the Chairman's advice to adjourn tha matter to the following morning and visit tho ground, where they could decide the beat thing to be done without the slightest difficulty. The Council adjourned accordingly
The Council met yesterday morning, and decided upon leasing eighteen inches of frontage to the owner of section 9, block 11., adjoining the Town Hall site, for 21 years, for ft lump sum. of £10.
