PUBLIC MEETING AT ROXBURGH.

(From a Correspondent.) A public meeting was held at Mr. "Brighton's .Commercial Assembly Rooms on the evening of Friday last, in connection with "Juno* settlement in tbe district. Mr. John Beighton having been ealleJ to the chair, Mr. G. Mackay -proposed, and Mr. G. M'Leay seconded; " That, in tbe opinion of %bis meeting, the Government are not keeping good faith with the public in opening land for settlement on, Henderson's run, Millers Flat, other than that originally arranged to be thrown open ; and that the laud now surveyed is unfit for settlement, tbe blocks being surveyed for the "runholder embracing the -only land suitable for agricultural settlement." Carried. _ * „ • "Proposed by Mr. J. Woodbouse, seconded Mr. M. M'Donald; " That a committee be consisting of Messrs. Ireland, Woodhouie, J. Beighton, Fitzgerald, G. Mackay, Burton, D. Cormack,' Anderson, Manuel, and Birch, for tbe purpose of protesting against the action Of "the Government in arranging to nell privately to the runholder the only block of land on Henderson's run, Millars Flat, suitable for 'agricultural settlement." 'Carried. Proposed by Mr. G. Burton, and' seconded by Mr. T. Cornish, " That the Committee be "instructed to communicate with Mr. Holloway, and invite him to visit the district, and confer with the committee and public generally on the inducements held out to immigrants of small means, and forward a concise statement showing the manner in which the public lands of the Mount Benger district are. being disposed of to runholdiiig capitalists ; ■also, to inform him of the vexatious obstructions placed in the way ef residents of many youra standing obtaining even a few acres for Carried. Proposed by Mr. E r Morrison, and seconded by .Mr, D. Le Bedell " That this meeting desires to *expresß their unqualified disapproval of the present arrangements by which applicanta for land on deferred payments are compelled to travel to the Dunstan to apply for land, instead of applications being received 'in the locality where tbe land is situated." Carried. Proposed by Mr. Fitzgerald, and seconded by Mr. Held, "That Mr. E, Morrison he tfecretary/' Carried. Proposed by Mr, Burton, and seconded by Mr: D., Cormack, " Tbat copies of tfeese resolutions be .forwarded 't6 tlife" Government." Carried; Aft&r, a cordial vote Of thanks to the 'Chairman, the meeting broke up.
